During its decade of operation, this stainless-ste- el streamliner has enjoyed popular favor with the traveling public to a degree which is the envy of all other long-distan- ce carriers. The train is jointly owned and operated by the Rio Grande, Bur-lington and Western Pacific rail-roads. Figures compiled by Rio Grande's passenger traffic man-ager, H. F. Eno, reveal that the average number of passengers carried per trip is equal to 89.4 percent of capacity an amaz-ing figure for a year-'roun- d operation. The California Zephyr was the first transcontinental train to feature Vista-Dom- es the glass-enclos- ed observation decks about the normal roof line. It is still the only one to offer five Vista-Dom- es per train. The train is schuled so as to pass thru the most scenic por-tions of its 2,530-mi- le route the Colorado Rockies and Cal-ifornia's Feather River Canyon during daylight hours. Six complete 12-c- ar trains are required to operate daily service in both directions, representing a total investment of approxi-mately $18 million. The trains have clicked off a total of 18,520,100 miles Mr. Eno said, more than four million of which have been on Rio Grande rails During the ten year period, it has carried more than million passengers. California Zephyr service be-gan at both San Francisco and Chicago on March 20, 1949, and the two trains reached Rio Grande rails at Salt Lake City and Denver on March 21. The first "meet" of the east-an- d west-boun- d trains occurred at 1:44 p.m, that day in Glen-woo- d Canyon of the Colorado River; a most appropriate lo-cation as it was the beauty of this canyon that inspired the idea that resulted in the Vista-Dom- e. A special birthday party, com-plete with birthday cake and 10 candles, is planned aboard both east and west-boun- d trains Sat-urday. "ilr. and Lira. Gerald L.
