Stop at a red light alongside a city bus and as the light turns yellow the bus will, creep across the Dedf strian lane, then with the green light, out dangles the driver's hand and into your lane comes the bus. You have three choices of action: remain where you are until the bus is out of the way, drive forward in your lane of traffic and hope the right side of your car comes out OK, or pull over in the left side of the road. These driving habits are not true of all the city bus drivers but are common enough to justify some action to stop them. Except for emergency vehicles the traffic laws give no more rights to one than they do to another. If the bus drivers expect con-sideration for the fact that they have schedules to keep, then they will have to show consideration for other drivers. Apathy Is Dangerous The most dangerous situation America has to face today, or in the future, is public apathy. Americans as a group will accept intolerable situations and adverse conditions that as individuals they would reject and. fight against at once. This typical American trait is being utilized by our Washington politicos to pile on us economic burdens of unbelievable enormity. Should this waste of money cease at once our grandchildren Will still be paying off the debt. We are told that a certain project is necessary, that billions must be spent on foreign aid, that this bureau and that agency are essential to the public's welfare. We are told that nearly 80 billion is re-quired to finance the government for just 12 months. This lack of consideration for the tax paying public is the fault of the tax paying public. A little effort put forth by this same public would create the most DQwerfuL force known in this world todav. Continuing to ignore reality, and letting the other fellow do it, will result in a weakening of this country from which it might not recover. Don't continue to be wishy-wash- y but make known to your congress-men in plain and certain terms your wishes for America. Only you, the public, can alter conditions and if you fail to do so, only you can be blamed.. A CONFUSED WORLD by Merle Riche It is almost too much to ask any man to follow the tortuous :hanges in international affairs. For example, if war should break out in the Middle East Nasser will be fighting with Russian weap-ons. Kasem, so-call- ed champion of the Commu-nists, will be f-- y t --sr. ! fighting with British weapons. Meantime Khrushchev, posing as a westerner at heart, has pro-posed secret offers to Adenauer. Slyly he insinuates that China is the real enemy and that Russia and Germany should team up to eliminate that danger. All the while he also pictures to Adenauer that America, Britaia and France will never deliver with their promises to Germany. While all this goes on, of course, Mao Tse-tun- g is suspi- - ious of Khrushchev. Therefore, Red China seeks to involve Russia in war which would exhaust both the Reds and the West. For this Mao has said that he can afford to sacrifice 300,000,000 men and still come out of the war as the leading nation of the world. Though there is much in the news about Russia's part in build-ing the great new Egyptian dam it should also be noted that the ten-fo- ot high neon letters that flash out over the Nile spell only one word-- - KRUPP. This great German concern with its far-flu- ng ramifications has once again reached Africa on the Nile and this to fill the gap that Russia cannot fill and that is to deliver consumer goods at a price that will ensure them the business. Germany is an increasingly important factor in the Middle East. She is popular among the Arabs and the fact that Germany has bought arms, from Israel has had great impact. Washington was right when he warned America against foreign entanglements. |
