Show Page 6 SOUTH IAST INDEPENDENT Sugar House, Utah Thursday, March 14, 1957 "Teen-Talkers-" OLYMPUS JR HIGH by Nick Sturgeon The Olympus Jr. Bulldogs stretched their winning streak to four games with a crushing 42-2- 2 win over Granite Jr at Olympus on Tuesday, March 5. The Bull-dogs now have a 6-- 2 won-lo- st record in league play, and a slim chance to tie for first place. If they defeat the Central Bruins at Central Jr. Thursday, March 14, they can do no worse than finish in a tie with the Bruins for second place. And if Valley Jr. loses its game to Evergreen Jr. while the Bulldogs are defeating Central (this is all conjecture, not prediction), all four teams Olympus, Evergreen Valley, and Central would finish in a tie for first place. If this should hap-pen, however, there isn't too much chance that a playoff would ensue to determine the champion Students at Olympus aren't allowed to bring their radios to school, but at noon-tim- e they have something just as good or, at least, ALMOST as good. That's when ninth grader Raymond Graham takes over the school's intercom system with records, humorous comments (not all of them intentional), and ads for school functions. Ray has all of the hit recordings of the day (twenty-fiv- e records at a generous estimate). Most of the records are "borrowed" from various stu-dents around the school some people are still wondering what happened to their records. Ray takes requests for records through his technician and handyman-in- -general, Sandy Gllmour. However, he has an unpopular policy of filling these request only when he feels like it which isn't too often This show continues to rate as the number one cause of indiges-tion during the lunch hour at Olympus Junior. 'Twixt Us Teens by Tibby Tucker Manners matter - - - which I, Tibby, am sure you'll agree. It's positively grim to sit across the table from someone who talks with their mouth full - - - chews with their mouth open licks fingers - - - spills crumbs - - - or does any number of other unpleasantries during the dining how , Here is one time when it really pays to see yourself as others see you. Because you just aren't aware of how you might be slipping up on table manners unless you make a conscientious check of your habits. Remember teens, that these items suggested below are tried and true rules - - - you will look better while eating, you will be more pleasing, you will have more self-respe- ct and you WON'T get talked about if you practice them. Knives, forks and spoons are to eat with not toy with Also, don't brandish the silverware around to emphasize a pointf for Instance, when speaking. It looks threatening! Please don't insult the hostess or worry the other diners by picking gingerly at your food as if searcmng for an egg peel, a hair, a bug, a bruise or some other unpleasant item. Don't play slurp-and-sluff- le when taking food from plate to mouth. Nor should you hover over your plate like a guardian angel. Sit up gracefully and bring fork quietly from plate to mouth - - -- don't take mouth down to level of plate. Cut your sandwiches in half (including hamburgers). They taste just as good - - - they last longer - - - you look better! Re-member the rule of one hand on an item you are eating (except corn on the cob) ? Well, try maneuvering a whole hamburger with one hand - - - gracefully! Use a knife and fork to eat fancy club sandwiches Do touch your napkin lightly to your mouth frequently. Do not mop it as though you were trying to remove it from your face ! When food is passed your way, either accept it or reject it gracefully and without any comment as to whether you "don't like this" or "what is it?" or "I'm allergic" - - - just say thank you - - -- or no thank you. :LjajdEi2dlOi' Don't stir up your food, blending everything together. You may like to make soup of your ice cream sundae, but it's a sure fine way of helping others lose their appetites altogether To remove something you don't want in your mouth, don't try to hide behind a napkin, or balance it on fork or spoon, wait until attention is not your way and then quickly and deftly remove a bone or stone or whatever with your fingers. A good rule is to make anything smaller before you put it into your mouth - - - that is, break a donut, cut a sandwich, slice pieces of meat one at a time (don't chop it all up at once). - . - OLYMPUS HIGH By Kathleen Illnckley Beard Growing Content Last Friday, Dave Rideout was awarded a gift certificate for a pair of Florsheim shoes, after tak-ing first place for the best all-arou- nd beard in the annual Beard Growing Contest sponsored by the Men's Association of Olympus High. At the end of a near three week period boys assembled in the gym-nasium to be judged on their efforts. The officers of the Girls' Assoc-iation, Ruth White, Vera Ann Len-roo- tt Deena Sherman, Sherry Smith, Kathleen Kilpaek. Judy Davis and Nancy Stevens, were confirmed judges After much probing and debat-ing, the girls reached a final de-cision and Paul Curtis was awarded the prize for the most unique beard. Patriotic Paul had very carefully died his beard green and then artistically carved the initials O and H in it, representing Olym-pus High and the school colors green and gray. Last and least was the beard of Kenny Lane's. Kenny was pre-sented with a pair of outdated and dirty shoes (Florsheim) for win-ning first place in the "most ef-forts with the least results" division.
