Show W -1 -.i I Editorial Page ... Utah's legislature is underway. It is composed of folks just like you and me. Desirous of having a part in the law-making machinery of the State they ran for public office, won, laid aside in part their usual business routines, taking upon up-on themselves high civic duty. Some are old hands, others new. Both are faced alike with the usual informative speeches and a seemingly endless array of printed material filled with facts, figures and fancy just too much of it for any one person to thoroughly master. But again, that's why committees com-mittees are set up with appointments appoint-ments to become expert in certain areas that their recommendations might be the basis upon which others might cast a vote. In other words, faith in the integrity in-tegrity of our fellow man, trust, confidence, are foundation stones upon which our legislative processes pro-cesses rest. We feel that our Capitol halls are filled with men whose aim is to benefit this State, to deal fairly and justly with the people. We, the people, have displayed, too, a similar faith, trust and confidence con-fidence in placing them where we thought they could most effectively serve us. But that is not the end. That they carry out the .will of the people means constant vigilance on the Rart of those who cast the vote. And while it is true that we can repudiate a man through the polls, how much better it is to so advise him of our beliefs and desires that he can be intelligently guided and merit another term. The alertness of newspapers through their editorial staffs, forums, and analysts; the discussions discus-sions and actions of civic groups and private organizations dedicated dedi-cated to the discussions of public affairs, helps to temper the law making process. Let's all do our part for when this session of the legislature is over there will be no one to blame or praise but ourselves. |
