Show Have you read the paper carefully lately? Then you perhaps will remember these two headlines "Stray Slug Strikes Stray Dog as Patrolman Fires" and "Watchdog Dies Fighting off Burglars.' There you have the two extremes of the dog problem. One, the cast-off stray, uncared for, unloved, unwanted, allowed to roam the streets until an officer of the law was forced to shoot it. even taking a chance of a "stray" bullet that might connect with anything any-thing beyond it, and on the other hand, the faithful friend who willingly gave his life in the protection of the property of an owner who prized his dog, and who cared for him. Somewhere in between, there must be a happy medium to follow. Every dog is not called upon to offer up his life in the protection of his owner's property, but few dogs that are loved and cared for will allow their owners' property to be molested with giving battle to the intruder. On the other hand, the dog that is allowed to roam at will becomes anybody's dog, and has no way of determining if the intruder is a friend or foe. As a watchdog, he loses his value, because of this. If, as in the case of the dog that was shot by the officer, it happens to be a female, allowed to run loose and become a disgusting nuisance, the owner is even more at fault, and should be subject to repremand at the very least for allowing such a condition to exist on the streets where our children are going to and from school or just playing in their own yards. Owners of females, read your dog ordinance, ordi-nance, and remember, YOU MUST KEEP FEMALE DOGS SECLUDED, SE-CLUDED, or you are subject to losing them with no recourse. You dog owners, remember that your dog, if you allow him to become a tramp in the neighborhood, loses his value to you as a watch dog, andyou run the added risk of losing him to speeding cars, dog poisoners or the justice of the law. If you want your, dog, take care of him.. If you don't want him, make it your business to notify the proper authorities, and the dog will, be disposed of, or a home found for him where he will be taken care of properly. And if you are leaving the city or county, of if your dog has died, it would save your city or county commission many hours and much expense, if you would notify the License Department of the fact, so that their records can be so indicated and the collector will not make an unnecessary call ... A study of the Dog Ordinance, available in room 307 of the City and County Building on State and Fourth South downtown, will save lots of misunderstanding and will do a great deal to bring about a settlement of the present prdblem of roaming dogs that are a nuisance to the neighborhood, and will help to establish better relations between be-tween the residents of each neighborhood. |
