We can have truly represent-ative government only If all the groups and forces concerned make their views known, ; and support them with all legiti-mate tools at their command. GULLS PARADISE LOST The Early American mag-- - azin etells of the sad plight of the seagulls of St. Augustine, Florida, which, according to report, "are starving to death in the midst of plenty, because they have forgotten how to fish." . 7'( The gulls used to live on the waste from the local shrimp , fleet. iThey didn't , have . to catch fish - - or teach their young the techniques of fishing. Then the shrimp fleet moved away to Key West and par-adise was lost. The Early American says: "A few of the. birds had the intuition to follow the fleet. A few were enter, prising enough, or had enough instinct left, to take to the sea once more. But many of them can be seen sitting sadly where they were left, starving to death, because no one will bring them shrimp, while out in the Gulf there is a sea of fodd, fof the taking." These gulls" were victims of the gull equivalent" of a welfare state. .Their needs were met in return for little or no" effort on their part nd the result was a steady attrition of the qualities and abilities that go to 'make self-relian- ce and independence. And what the welfare state does to the lower orders of life, it does to the human animal as well. Apostle Harold B. Lee will give the ' dedicatory address at the Sunday ceremony set for the dedication of the new Wilford Stake center on Sunday December 28, at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon. The meeting will be conducted by Stake President George Z. Aposhian. Kenwood Ward was organized November 27, 1949, from part of Grandview Ward, East Mill-cre- k Stake, with George Z. Aposhian as its first bishop. Upon the creation of Wilford Stake, Bishop Aposhian was sustained as the new stake president on February 11, 1951, and J. Marlow White was or-dained as second bishop of Kenwood Ward. Due to population growth and expansion of the commun-ity, Kenwood Ward was divid-ed on January 21, 1954, and Samuel Lyle Johnson was sus-tained as bishop. Selected to serve as bishop of the newly created Kenwood Second Ward was Finn B. Paulsen. Meetings of all three wards were held in the original Grandview Ward chapel. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new building were con-ducted June 28, 1956 at a plot of unadorned "White" ground at the intersection of Kenwood Street and 3080 So., with President Bruce U. Mc-Conk- ie of the First Council of the Seventy, officiating. Bishop Paulsen was general contractor, Ethan B. Grow served as project superinten-dent, and Elias L. Brinton was project clerk. Work on the building progressed steadily and first meetings were conducted in the new chapel on Sunday, July 6, 1958. The new Wilford Stake center has shown that work and cooperation can do great things and this is just one instance of divide then build in the fast growing south-east area. Elder Harold B. Lee . BEHIND THE TIMES Too many American business-men have long considered them-selves to be above and remote from politics. But now, it's good to report there is a strong shift away from, this head-in-the-sa- nd attitude. More and more business leaders, speaking as individuals and on behalf of organizations, are pointing out that political business is everybody's business. A top official of Continental Oil Company provides a good example. He says that the American businessman must wake up to the threat of the growing political power and public sentiment being marsh-alled against him and partici- - , pate in public-spirite- d and constructive manner in politics . and government affaiss - - os he will soon be out of business and the ward of socialistic govern-ment. "Businessmen," he added, ' have lost their influence in political affairs besause they have been apathetic. . . anh have lagged woefully behind the times in appreciating and understanding the changes taking piace in the world around them." He offered six suggestions fIfill jf FOR SALE Hot Point pushbutton electric range like new. $125.00 must tee to appreciate.
