Show i Coop program paying dividends HILL AFB The Wage Grade Cooperative Education Program is flourishing at the Ogden Air Logistics Logis-tics Center's Directorate of Maintenance. The WG co-op is a two-year associate degree program for specialized spe-cialized skill disciplines within the directorate. The students are referred refer-red by colleges, screened by the hiring office and selected by maintenance supervisors. Students are hired as Wage Grade 03. Upon completion of the program they are converted to a career conditional appointment at the 05 level. More than 170 technical technic-al positions are targeted to be filled over the next two years. Last fiscal year 103 students converted to permanent per-manent positions. Students could become -electricians, machinists, sheet metal workers, aircraft gen-eralists gen-eralists and pneudraulicists. Employees are pretrained, realizing a cost of $218,319, and giving an obvious benefit of a fully trained technician at no cost to the government. The maintenance suggestion program also tallied tangible savings sav-ings of $2,705,425. Part of this savings sav-ings is attributed to an alert employee, em-ployee, Orrin Rosenquist, who recognized rec-ognized a problem in consumption of required freon gas that maintains purity in the initial cleaning and flushing of coolant pressure tanks. This is a required detail in refurbishing refur-bishing the AIM-9L missile. This innovative employee designed de-signed and built a filtering and distilling dis-tilling system to reuse thefreon and maintain purity specifications. The new system was built mainly from equipment acquired from reclamation, reclama-tion, resulting in a 50 percent reduction re-duction in processing time and freon specifications. First year savings totaled $212,192. |
