Show seventh tenth A annual anual sportsmens Sports S mens n s riot JA june VO ZAe at ath a and d ath sl VV F r WV VV VV V V TT r elep ration to be held at little park in uintah canyon Casy ss new features pa nned U be I 1 C and indian fair to be outstanding event this year celebration to unite finest culture of indians and wh whites ite combining and indian fair results in many new features I 1 by C C WRIGHT superintendent of uintah ouray indian agency committee machinery is once again getting into opera operation tio n for the greatest social and educational education ai event of the year in the uintah basin at a recent meeting of committee members plans were submitted and passed upon which make this years convention outstanding in many ways combining the annual and the indian fair should result in many added features and make a bigger and better event than ever before because the two celebrations have been combined the date has been advanced to august 30 31 and september 1 awis this will allow for agricultural exhibits to be in readiness and will also be early enough for children to attend the event before school opens in september it has been rumored that admission would be charged at the gate but this is not so the entire celebration will be free to all citizens of the country as usual historical background t by reason of its historic background fort Duch duchesne esile is actis lectory place for such a celebration I 1 which unites the finest culture of the indians and white I 1 people the fort was first established j by the war department in 1887 soldiers were station stationer eu there for many years but in 1911 it was restored to the jurisdiction of the interior department for use and occupancy of the ute tribe of indians and particular by the indian bureau as headquarters 1 for the uintah and ouray indian agency for many years fort duchesne duches 11 e has ha s been considered by indians and whites illige as a point of direct contact v i t h government departments benefits benefits to residents of the basin through brough government appropriations have amounted to millions of dollars and have been instrumental in much of the development of the country fort duchesne should continue to be a source of government enterprise berv serving ng a as a forum for better un Jert anding between the white and indian people it should be lecog lazed d on the one hanz han by the chite people that the indian pop illation has first right of occupancy and use not only of their reservation lands but of the 0 historic fort as well it should also b bg recognized by the indians indians on the other hand that the wl white I 1 it settlers in the basin have vested rights and that the development of the natural resources throughout the entire area will be more beneficial to all the people if such development is worked out in cooperative way white millie in indian than cooperation the U B L I 1 C and indian fair this year proposes to present certain educational material which will help both the andl indians ns T and d white people to under understand sta nd their true relationship to each other not only with respect to property and property rights right but with respect to schools churches roads and all other public utilities and every effort is being made to provide suitable facilities at fort duchesne this year to successfully cess fully carry out this program twelve indian members of the committee and twelve white hite memi bers of the committee have been assigned d in pairs to various branches of the and in dian F fair air performance these members are already busy arranging for illustrated lectures addresses exhibits games contests indian pageantry Pa gentry dances and other entertainment j we all look forward to an outi standing celebration this year with full participation by indians and whites alike |
