Show elementary ELEMENTS aileen smith and joan jean wells editors the following students contributed to the report helen aileen smith pearl dacon bacon rovenna ravenna perry lloyd nelson OUR NATURE TRIP the ath grades and other students of the roosevelt elementary school went to utah county sat biday april 13 we left roosevelt at a 31 and rea reached reache cheI ii utah county at a in while we were ere there we went to some very interesting places firse we went wen to the library librae Y there we met a lady who told us about the library she said were vinety ninety three thousand books and that only graduated students could get books from the library we surely enjoyed the talk we marched around in the rooms and saw many books we then went to the county cobit house on oil the front of the court aliouse were great pillars the man told us that it was I 1 roman arid and greek structure when we went into the building even the floors of the lower story were made of maible the upper stories were also mad of marble the ventilation of the building is a modern type for an example the rooms on aih either r side could be warm warin and the middle room co could uld be cool they thay can do this by moving a little ipswitch without g down to the furnace room 10 a regulate it we next went to the steel plant there we went through the furnace room where the men were feeding the furnace after we went from this room the man showed us the coke ovens we saw the red hot iron coming from the blast furnace iron was form ed long ago but in a dlf different ferent manner than coal there were small quani quantities ties of iron in miny many minerals and rocks As the water ran past it dissolved the iron and carried it all to a certain point and then deposited it this formed the velna veins or beds of iron ore to make the iron two materials are mixed with the ore in n the blast furnaces these materials are coke and limestone coke makes a very intense heat and melts the ore and limestone limestone is used to accumulate the waste materials in the ore these waste materials along with the li limestone are called slag blag this Is lighter than the melted iron and g oes to the surface for each ton of iron ore one halt half ton coke and one fourth ton of df limestone is used the ore Is IE heated to degram fabren fahrenheit it takes about fifteen hours from crom the time lime a piece of ore i put in at the top until cie t ie iron Is ready to be taken out of lie he batom after the melted iron Is 15 removed it is poured into moulds a little bigger than a large brick these are called pigs this iron Is called pig iron next we went to the city park at Spring springville ville there we ate our lunch and played around on the grass it was a beautiful place to eat out our lunch then wo we ant went to the art gallery it Is the most wonderful ghigli school exhibit in the world every year tho the artists from all over the west send their pictures to the gallery and when hey have the big exhibit the faculty and students choose the bes picture and buy it then they send the other pictures back to their owners after we itt the alt ait gallery we went to the state fish and same farm inside of 0 he lish fish house were many troughs of fish the fish are raised in the aliouse until they get so big then they are turned into a cement pond they have 3 1 fish north of the fish ponds were some pens there in the opens we saw peacocks elk deer ducks ci chows aws pheasants eagles and ollen osiers then we ve went vent to the mental hospital the grounds around the hospital were very beautiful some of the men were working others were cleaning the sidewalks we did not stay slay there long next we went to the museum there we saw many different kinds of animals and birds mount ed from the museum we went to elters hot pots at midway most of us went swimming tile the hot pots were the last place we stopped we left midway at 7 lock p V in and reached roosevelt at 1130 p in we all enjoyed the trip and we all had a good time |
