Show drouth Sa meeting held here monday W as well attena led LEONARD GARDNER OF NEOLA MADE CHAIRMAN OF DUCHESNE AND WEST END OF UINTAH COUNTY DROUTH RELIEF COMMITTEE WALTER ATWOOD ROOSEVELT IS SELECTED SECRETARY COMPLETE SURVEY MADE OF conditions EXISTING AND WAS TABULATED BY SELECTED committees SHOW OW IMMEDIATE HELP NECESSARY IN ORDER TO SAVE COUNTY DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR thousands of head of dairy stock compelled to hunt streets and ditch banto banks to exist due to the increase in the severity of the droutz conditions in duchesne and western uintah counties a meeting made up of representatives from practically every community in the region I 1 was held monday june ath in the roosevelt ward wand cha chaipel cb aipel pel the meeting was called to older at 2 lock by geo II if harrison harilson who ot stated abed the purpose of the meeting and then turned the chair over to walter B E atwood who presented his findings on a trip extending from smithfield on the north to payson on the south tho the trip was made with the view of the possibility lity of securing machinery to fol the purpose of processing livestock which must immediately bo be disposed of after a report of the trip the meeting was thrown open arr discussion of conditions and methods of relief which might be followed during the meeting meet lna IT was disclosed that we will have I 1 four head of stock to feed on olt each ton of hay ifor winter feeding ing during the meeting dr ler leroy ay nelson accompanied by george and E peterson of vernal arrived ai rived and presented a plan which cong consisted isted of tile the development of certain lands on the green river bottoms as a means r eana of producing feed for the w winter inter mr who has large holdings on the green liver ilver was very much enthused with the possible development of the bottoms it w was as pointed out however that the remoteness of the region necessitated the moving moring of livestock to the place of feel production which seemed to many out of the question the project would cost some which had been applied for on the basis or of 11 each from uintah and counties not being adequately advised many of the duchesne county representatives were somewhat opposed to the idea for the present at least another proposal consisting of a three point set up was briefly considered the three points were first an appeal to the drouth relief agency for enough money to purchase the surplus feed in a some sections of duchesne county see second to secure enough money to dinst install a 11 canning or processing machinery to use in providing facilities tor for the disposal of surplus continued on last lasi page DROUTH RELIEF ME MEETING ETING HELP HELD HERE MONDAY continued from page one livestock or asking that the surplus stock be purchased by the federal government on the same basis bagis as was used in the purchase of surplus hogs third the centralization of authority in directing use of available irrigation water and handling liand ling of livestock both plans were heard beard by a field committee sent bent out iby by the drouth relief board who took the various plans under advisement following the main meeting a committee composed of one representative from froin each coni community elected leonard D gardner as chairman and walter E atwood as secretary and went into a further discussion of oe the various proposals durin during the meeting the following follow ingi set of resolutions was drawn up and signed by a representative senta tive from each community WHEREAS an extreme emergency exists as a result of the drouth in this section and WHEREAS the prospective feed supply is for more than fifty per cent of the livestock and WHEREAS feed produced d ce in the uintah basin is being shipped out in spite of the dire shortage existing exist ln here and WHEREAS the forced sale of surplus livestock is resulting in fit a depressed market and iery ery meagre returns to those compelled to sell and WHEREAS every day that these surplus stock are allowed to ref roewin main in the basin still further reduces the possible number that c can an be kept over the winter therefore BE IT RESOLVED that we petition the governor of the state to set up appropriate administrative machinery to prevent the movement cf feed from one section of the state to another except when and it if such movement 0 of f feed Is declared advisable and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that sonie some central aid be provided for the orderly marketing mar kiting of surplus livestock to the end that the highest possible price may be realized and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we urge ure the necessity of immediate action to bring about the desired results respectfully submitted MEMBERS OF THE COUNTY DROUTH COMMITTEE A motion was also made and approved that it be the sense of the meeting that they go on renord as approving the proposed green river bottoms plan the meeting adjourned at p TO mi subject to the call of the chair |
