district convention of the eastern utah district ot of the utah Federa federation of ithe business and professional clubs held for the second time in the uintah basin saturday and sunday december 1011 10 11 at vernal utah clubs in this district comprise w of price helper ducheane boorse loosevelt Doo sevelt velt and Verr vernal val miss alice district chairman was in charge the sessions opened with a banquet held saturday evening at 8 at the commercial hotel which Is operated by the vernal pj pits sl ident dent mrs airs mae alae jor gensen the lobby ond reception room was like stepping into a garden of flowers the canaries in every corner which made one feel that the winter i and cold weather were past each I 1 guest was resented ted with a cor cori J i sage of roses guests were ere escort ed into the large dining aioo ii by the reception committee the teni ceni ter piece of the long table was nas a larso white glistening ball representing the earth with a black J sll houtte of the business woman standing on top small white candles candies surrounding the ear earth th long black tapers were barni burning ng along the table at each a small candle burned which guided the a past preside president nl of the vernal club all members met at the hotel at nine and from there were transported ir in very unique covered wagons to martins home horseshoes were hung on ithe porch for a good luck wish the scheme carried out was hard times but 13 good time out in the west the small tables were covered with cleverly made burlap covers colored napkins crude candle holders formed the two day entertainment the women of america bore their lull full share of the suffering and service which were necessary to make possible americas boria war victory for nearly every man who endured the hardships hardship and dangers of camp ship and battle front there was a woman at home living through long months of agonizing worry ana pinching sacrifice for every man rodn at the front was a woman weman serving at home in support of his endeavors after the war had been x vun n and the men of the aimed forces had banded together in the amei ican legion to carry forward their service to country in the days of peace it was only natural that tho the women of their should desire to continue serving with them the result of this desire is the american legion auxiliary the largest and most influential fluent ial organization organisation of women in ill the united states today the establishment of a womans comans auxiliary of the american legon was provided for by the first firs t national convention of the iv aglon aon in alinn november 1012 1919 the call for the first national convention of the auxiliary was issued by john G emery national commander of tin le legion ion and the convention met in kansas city mo ale november 2 1321 1921 representative were p besent from practically every state in fit the union and two foreign possessions A national constitution ution and bylaws by laws modeled on an that of the legion was adopted the preamble of the legion constitution was adopted with the insertion of the phrase to participate in and contribute to 10 the accomplishment of the alms and purposes of the american legion national officers were elec erected and provisions made tor for tho the completion of the national organization iza tion the name was vas changeat from auxiliary of the american legion to american deslon ia loii auxiliary and so BO the organization of the american legion auxiliary as a separate entity was la in reality established national headquarters of the auxiliary was established at indianapolis di ind where national headquarters of the legion vars w already located in 1925 the first unit of the indiana world war memorial was completed and the national headquarters of the two tu organizations tlona moved from temporary quarters into this beaubr ful stone building from a few thousand women grouped in a few score units in 1921 the organization has expanded to more than members in units the purpose of the american legion auxiliary ia I 1 s to aid tile american legion in ill carrying out ou the great program of peace time service to america to which thi legion is dedicated although or c ten working on projects of its own the auxiliary has no purposes that are apart front from the alms aims of the legion it la is in all senses an auxiliary of tle american lesion legion and its members serve side by side with the men of the legion in a spirit of unselfish devotion de to the well being of the american republic to carry on the great task of caring tor for the world war disabled who shall fill the gov ei ament hospitals to the number of more than and of whom other thousands are still struggling to regain a place in civil rife life is one of the first endeavors of the auxiliary the work which the auxiliary is doing for these nien men Is something which no othor other agency could per perform forin so wet wen something which requires thie the warm understanding touch to uch of women who themselves have experienced perien ced the ng of having their own loed ones at war nearly a million dollars are expended each year by the auxiliary in hospitals and w welfare e cifare for the benefit of the disabled as well as an inestimable amount of personal attention which la is often the most valuable thing which can be given iven a sut but fering ferane man in a hospital tar far from hume home the auxiliary establishes and maintains contact between veterans in hospitals and their families it assists the families of ex service men who are in hospitals or unable to work it aids disabled men to find work and disposes of the products made by them in hospitals the poppy sale is an apt example of this one phase 0 of work it gives it cheery Chilst maa to all the veterans who are confined to the hospitals on that day and brightens homes which otherwise would have to count their christmas asi ad part of the wars sacrifice por for the children of the war veterans the auxiliary Is also doing a very important worx worn it Is aiding thousands of children every year yair to receive the neca deew 6 kitias of life destitute children are placed la in homes where they can receive their rightful be hev v taz tase e of a wholesome american upbringing assistance la Is given widows of veterans and wives u m disabled men in keeping their families together nurseries tor the children 0 of the disabled are sponsored at government hospitals wherever children ot of men who served are found in need tur tuc auxiliary goes to work side by side with the lesion lej lori to prevent the he children froin f om paying in suffering and lark lack of opportunity or the service their fathers gave to our country the legion and auxiliary are carrying out a joint program tv iu bring opportunities for higher education e 1 I t ton to 10 all war orphans units of the auxiliary through out the country are working with their posts for the betterment of 0 their communities they are carrying out projects long needed oy ny their towns and cities and are accomplishments will be felt for into the future they are estaba establishing hing community I 1 center buildings working for good g oo 00 d told roads 3 obtaining playgrounds rounda beautifying parks sponsoring units ol 01 or camp flie file girls and girl scouts aiding boy scout work sponsoring the establishment of li barles and night schools conducting health h clinics and aiding hospitals scores of different kinds of activities which build up tai tiiu communities and strengthen the bodies minds and morals or of t in citizenship aro are being carried out thi this work is on ruch cuch an extein give scale beale that it has assumed national importance the auxiliary also stands leady to move to the relief relict of communities that iare are stricken by disaster in the last few years it served with tm m legion in the great flood and hurricane disaster in the mississippi valley in new england egland and in florida being the first in n the field with an organized force of workers it red fed sheltered and clothed refuges refuge sand and assisted them in reestablishing establishing re their homes heroes atter alter the flood waters had subsided no body of women in america is more desirous of maintaining peace than the women of tuo auxiliary they know front from bitted bit i goodbyes good byes and agonizing toe of worry what it means to have the country go to war many ot of them are living in the shadows of grief cast by the wars losses yet as much as they would like to believe that there will never again be win they are forced to reco recognize nize that war is still a fuel fact in the t e world and as cush its possibility sibl lity must be faced they are arc raising their voices to demand that the country shall be prepared so EO that it if it la Is ever again assailed it can be quickly and successfully cess which so many have been willing to die to raise a voice for the maintenance ot of its defense ao w 10 assist in ill fostering its nl ill friendships and to stand guara over its principles and ideal these are big things for any organization to undertake and only through a real devotion devot lon to by all its members can the country hope to achieve its ends membership in the auxiliary la Is limited to women who have a direct personal connection with world war service through the service of a member ol of their immediate family with the armed forces during the war or through their own service with the armed forces this would apply to nurses or other women serving during the war upon establishment of eligibility such women may become members of a local unit or of the auxiliary and ethroue n the unit of the state and nathon national member I 1 auxiliary organizations A member of a local unit Is also s member of the state department and the national organization just as a citizen of chicago is also a citizen of illinois and of the united states by the payment of dues in the local unit she also contributes to the support or of the state and national organizations all women who are eligible to 10 in the auxiliary come under tinder one or more of the three fo lowing classifications a mothers wives sisters or daughters of members of the american legion b mothers wives slaters or daughters of men and women who were in the military or naval service of the U S between april 6 1917 and november 11 1918 and who died in line of duty or after honorable discharge c women of their own alghi e are eligible to membership in the american leelon the only form of that Is a authorized la Is active mem barship and there earl can be b eno no grant ing of special or honorary membership for any purpose or reason whatsoever once accepted as an auxiliary member women eligible under classification a above may continue their membership front from year nar to year whether or not their male relative continues to be a member of the lesion legion the tact fact that her service relative is rio no longer a I 1 member of the legion does not compel the auxiliary member to lose her
