Show Evening Planned To Honor Waite Parents and friends have planned a reception to honor Bountiful's football mentor. By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL How can one thank a man who has helped "mold" the lives of so many young men? THIS IS the question asked of Paul Waite, Boumiful High football and wrestling coach for the past ten years. But former players, friends and parents will have the opportunity to thank Coach Waite in person next Tuesday night (April 27) during a farewell and appreciation night in his honor. A reception will be held at Bountiful High from 8-10 p.m. with a program scheduled at 9 p.m. Refreshments Refresh-ments will be served. THROUGH THE years Couch Waite has had a great influence on the lives of many young men students as well as high school football players. He was a coach at Viewmont High before being named grid mentor at Bountiful High ten years ago. During his tenor at BHS he coached three or more sons from several families. Among those families were Matt, Monty and Mark Dickerson; Duve, Scott and Rob Faddis; Scott, Doug, Ernie and Brad Freckelton; Fred, Larry and Ron Hale; Ron, Russell and Darren Hammer; Tom, Steve, and Cory Hilton; Scott, Craig and Ken Hosking; Marven, John and Steve Luddington; Berrie, Kyle and Rulon McKa-y; McKa-y; Mike, Pat and John Robertson; Robert-son; Brett, Steve and Kendall Smith; and Brad, Rich and i Darrell Welling. THOSE PLANNING the ; eveningare Duane Welling, Mrs. Wilford (Janice) Freckelton, Freckel-ton, Mrs. Tom (Marilyn) Hilton, Hil-ton, Mrs. Wayne (LaVee) Nelson, Nel-son, Principal Don Perkins, and Mrs. Robert (Annette) Hosking. They said a scrapbook for Coach Waite is being compiled and anyone having a picture or would like to write .a tribute to the coach are asked to bring it with them Tuesday. If you are unable to attend, call LaVee Nelson, 295-6715. PARENTS OF former football foot-ball players have heaped praise on Coach Waite over the years most of them paying tribute to him as a person per-son as well as a coach. They agree that many young men's lives have been touched some drastically changed because of the influence influ-ence he has had on them. "He has taught our boys discipline, dedication and how to achieve through hard work. Teachers like Paul are few and far between be-tween and he will be greatly missed on the gridiron at Bountiful High," commented one proud parent. COACH WAITE is giving up his coaching career to become vice principal at Centerville Jr. High. It was a hard decision for Paul. He had a promising future fu-ture in coaching, being recognized recog-nized as one of the best high school football coaches in Utah. COACH WAITE had been considered for coaching on the college level, but never got the invitation. Paul went back to school and earned his professional profes-sional certificate in secondary administration which opened the door for his appointment as vice principal at Centerville Jr. High. During his ten years at Bountiful High, Coach Waite's records spoke for his talent as a grid coach. He amassed an overall record of 75 wins and 32 losses a very commendable achievement. DURING THE past decade he won the state football championship cham-pionship once; the region crown four times; and made the state playoffs eight times. He placed second in the state twice, losing close games to the state championship team. BOUNTIFUL Football Coach Paul Waite and Mrs. Myrintha Gill, former teacher of -speech and drama' at Bountiful High, will be honored by faculty, students and friends at separate receptions this week. MRS. GILL, who taught at BHS from its first yearin 1951-52 until she resigned in 1968, will be honored at a reception Thursday (April 22) plan ned for 7-8 p.m. in the school's home economics reception area. The reception will precede the opening night performance of "Guys and Dolls" in the school's auditorium. Coach Waite will be honored by the BHS Booster Club, former players and friends at a farewell and appreciation night at the school on Tuesday, April 27, from 8-10 p.m. A program is scheduled at 9 p.m. and refreshments will be served. |
