produces grair grain or shelled corra ct cf grood good quality abundantly A mistake is ofton often made tn in northern xe legions gions or those of high altitude in attempting attempt irig to grow varieties of corn which are not sufficiently early in maturing climate soil and an adequate supply of irrigation water are factors favorable to the production product iou of high yields of good quality corn in the uintah basin utah however the mistake mentioned above is commonly made and has probably been the chief cause of failure iu the past A period of about days extending from about june TO IO to september 20 is available during which frost as a rule does not occur this short growing period of necessity limits the corn grower to the use of hardy varieties wad aud strains for his crop these must either be found or developed for each particular region fortunately however most of tire the varieties which have been developed for northern regions are well adapted for the uintah basca the recommendations which tollow follow are based on results obtained from variety tests testa conducted on tho the uintah basin alfalfa seed esperi mental farm farin during the seasons of 1926 to 1929 inclusive the grain of flint corn as a rule matures earlier than dent and Is also harder the yellow color of grain la is often preferred over the white eitam it contains con taina vitamin A which is absent in the latter latte r the feed value of yellow and white corn are re otherwise about equal when alfalfa Is fed with earn corn to livestock vitamin A Is supplied plied from that source then whito white corn may be cou soldered as being fully equal to tho the yellow vellow the yield and quality of fodder produced by each of the various varieties of corn come la in for some consideration by many growers the character wad aud habit ot of the plants are also considered in connection with ease in handling during the cultural wad aud harvesting operations these latter considerations are obviously sly secondary to those which contribute to a high yield of good quality grain in the table are listed on an air dry basis the acre bushel yields of 01 grain acre pound yields of fodder and the percentage of ears maturing tor for each variety tested on the ex es eri mental farm this test did not include all of the varieties which may be found adapted to the basin but only a few which were thought sufficiently dependable as to be worthy of recommendation in the group of early maturing flaut corns the variety C gehu ehu has perhaps made the b best st showing in tile the test the acre yield of bushels of grain is an average of the crops from three seasons the percentage of ears maturing is is 99 which for practical purposes la Is essentially senti ally full maturity gehu is particularly valuable in this respect aud may be depended upon to mature its grain during any average season the grain is yellow in color medium hard and medium to small in size because ot of its ita 6 mall ismall size alze of grain it is highly prized as a teed feed for turkeys wad aud other poultry gehu ha has 3 the disadvantage of producing small plants which sucker freely resulting in low acre yield of fodder it also presents some difficulties at harvest time due to the small adall plants plant sand and the low position at which the ears are bobae on the stalks however despite these difficulties ticul ties gehu is a valuable variety of corn and is worthy of trial on a small scale by all corn growers in the uintah basin mercer Is acsai also a yellow flint corn which has some promise of being a good variety it produces larger ears and kernels than gehu as well as larger plants and more fodder to the acre the yield data as given in the table are for one avasou only the remaining varieties in this group have also been tried only one season and the data should be taken as an indication Indica tiou only since dent corn Is preferred over flint elint by zo so many growers special attention atten tiou iora has been given in an attempt to find some come early maturing varieties extra early minnesota no 1 IS 3 has so tar far gien gi gl reniche en the most promising results many of the common str strains airas of Minne stoa no 13 do not mature sufficiently early to be trust worthy when grown in the ustah basin it if this variety Is to be grown at all an extra early strain should be secured cured from some reliable source minnesota no 13 is an improved corn and its habit of growth makes it a pleasant one to work with during the growing season and at harvest time no 25 is similar to extra early minnesota no 13 and from one seasons trial seems to be about as nod good rustlers white dent has been tried darlng two sea sopas and was found to mature early and produce a fair yield of high quality grain mid and fodder it is a white corn but should not be discriminated against too loo ly on this accounts account as aa it otherwise possesses many of the de ei si reable features of good dent corn a aled variety which Is about equal to gehu in early maturing qualities it also aiso produces a larger filant wad aud consequently more fodder to the acre acre northwestern dent should be grown in h sections where minnesota no 13 does not mature well and when a dent corn Is preferred over a flint there are many varieties and strains of corn which may be classed as medium to early maturing when grosu in the uintah basin during some seasons these varieties mature well but usually a considerable portion ot of the ears cars are immature at al 1 harvest time the grower cannot be sure ot of them on this point and these i varieties should not be used chou i better ones are available among these theae undependable varieties are the common strains of minnesota no 13 aud australian white flint the silage corns do not have an important place in the agriculture oi of the uintah basin these varieties are all late in maturing aud it iq 1 doubtful it if they are of any value 1 here at af the present tim time e all of the corns recommended in this report are standard varieties and seed may be purchased from reliable seed dealers in farm
