Show THE POWER TRUST AND MUD 1 by J P MAY cu our friend judge challenges any man to prove that the swing johnson bill Is against interests Us ile seems to have his argument narrowed nano narl ived owed down to the proposition that this famous le legislation Is is the only possible ps sible method by which utah may get first clas claa i water lights for her land drained by tle colorado and tle judge I 1 is still burdened by the diehn that hie power trust is the he big fiig mon monster that is ib immediate realization ot of this boon legislator on the iniga tion committee in the lawer house n B 1 0 eatherwood l has wan ix pla ining this affair as present presented fd in the salt lake papers mr swing md iad to 10 take a good ineck aeck air leatherwood made this ali power trust talk look iatha r small eh calitri Calito alas inias powel powerful ful lobby spending spend 1115 big sums of money even hirisi big men in ili washington to help theiu theirl mr air swing having received 2500 per day for time on the same job has been doing things that the power trust would likely hesitate to do this power trust chatter is ridiculous redi culous in the main but the judge says it if this legislation is defeated we have not one cne drop of water in low water that is a wonderful Nond erful to make in support of the jc linson barnson bill W wi all know that water is about all taken in low lov water but tho the proposed dam is continued on page five continued from page one among things for the purpose of controlling high higa water thu high water Is the big pio blim mona lake will store acre teet feet of 0 water at a cost tor for store re of abias 1000 per der are a re foot in utah and in colorado we have many res tear r voir sites wherein we may store mountain water high water at a very low lov price three acre feet feel per aero acre per der annum is the maximum allowance in utah for lr much inch of our land will produce n maximum axi crops if given two acre feet pr pir acre acra per annum and good deep soils at this altitude will in many places be given ample water it if one acre toot foot per acre Is intelli gently used utah Is not opposed to doulat D dam am and utah is not opposed to tse che colorado river compact provid provi ed the dam will not be built on oil false assumption but our governor and our representative in congress the five being three and two democrats are fighting california Call tornia fornia a demands on cb that are very vital it is not right and not in harmony with well known law for the federal government to take water or power tor for way any purpose unless the state or states grant the right judge hollenbeck ignores this treating it as unimportant it is elementary law that all rights not reserved ved to the catlon are granted to the states or from a democratic view point all rights which the states do not grant to the national government they reserve for themselves it both ways I 1 i in the technical bulletin no 67 printed by the U S dept of agriculture the silt plo problem blem of the colorado river and its relation to irrigation we have another view ot of this boulder dam deal that is quite interesting that is silt sill or plain mud T this tah his mud i a little sandy but by the time it is carried along canals and laterals literals late rals it is almost common mud the disposition ol of this silt 1 in I the imperial valley country costs possibly per acre per annum more or less hence the building of dams is not only to handle nigh high water but to make less the burden of handling the mud down there As mr air leatherwood has only disclosed the actual demand for more water is very secondary and the demand for additional dit ional farm land down there thene Is at present a huge joke boulder dam Is largely a project to control the silt and to produce power so far as its present practical value is concerned the control of 0 high water the danger of floods is secondary as compard comparin comp arid to these two primary for spending so much money tile the technical bulletin noted above shows that the boulder dam daill would contend with acre feet of silt per annum and this thia would nearly fill it up in ia years hence in fifty years the silt would mould be no small quantity therefore boulder dam would demand other dams above and below to control contro this mud or silt sill several of them but under the guise of flood control water tor for irrigation water fo cities and to get power to pay the bill we sw see that this dam business will save millions of dollars to the farmers down there in handling the mud it if they get that they wit wil want big reservoirs such as the proposed ouray reservoir places where water may be stored store d not for foi the use ot of farmers where it is stored but to control silt we may have a number of such reservoirs in utah not tor for any other primary purpose except t to 0 serve as basins for sto irn f irb silt or mud such basins basin sas as the proposed propos d oural reservoir would provide water tor for power purposes however these bodies of water would flood large areas of our best land thi ouray reservoir would as proposed comi com nearly to randlett townsite back up tip tae gae green river nearly to jensen and up willow creek to the junction of that stream with hill creek and far up white river this would flood nearly all of ouray valley and other very valuable tracts in that part of the basin the one proposed in dagget LOn coilty rity would be valuable as a power site and it would not cover such very valuable land as the ouray reservoir yet it would take from our farm area P lar langs largs 3 amount ot of good land it is plain to be seen that call cali fornia wants the high water controlled troll ed and to get they te TB quire a very high dam this technical bulletin advises that earnest earne it consideration should be given to hatsing rather thin lowering the height of this proposed structure because water la Is cheaper to store as tho the dam is made higher but feet Is about as high as they daro dare request it is plainly evident that this boulder dana dam business is keeping our white river lands and ouray section held sE sewed iwed up in tact fact the entire uintah basla basin Is in the grip of a monster a selfish california emie emr to tiet art power arid and silt control it is not enough that we produce the water letting allera have an appropriation but we must sacrifice our states rights all arid estates riE friits ri lits its in a federalism controlling the water the dams etc this should make our friend one judge really feel like telling california this it if you want such federalism dorni dominating natia vital necessities in our state such as our water you should at least be generous enough to not ask us to give you basins in which to store the mud that water which runs off our lands has a utah brand in with it if not on it and that is mud we wont keep the mud and let you have the purified water the silt cleaned water no sir california you must take the mud too |
