makers akers A resolution passed the senate asking tor for a memorial to congress requesting an adequate tariff on sugar to relieve the beet growers from their present precarious situation considerable interest and much discussion featured the presentation of the message of gov GOT dern to the legislature republicans were placed as chairmen of the committees and also the important boards are to be guided by the majority malo rity party among the bills of special interest were the following one seeking the repeal of the indeterminate sentence lw and one providing lor for the sterilization of criminals convicted ot of the rape of 0 a child under the age of 13 years the indeterminate sentence repeal and tile the sterilization bills were introduced by senator W D candland and both would become effective upon approval the boulder dam problem occupied the forefront of the legislature and its ita forum early action la is to be taken by the utah body on this important interstate problem there has been considerable agitation in favor of the repeal of the indeterminate sentence law and the increase in crime augmented that agitation many contend former convicts are I 1 largely responsible for the cri crime in e situation in the country and they believe that the removal of the powers of the board of pardons would do much towards clearing up the crime difficulties with the enactment of the candland bill repealing the indeterminate sentence law the sentences of the persons convicted of crime would be fixed definitely by the tha courts senate bill no 3 introduced by senator hollingsworth provides for the guardianship of incompetent veterans and the minor children of mentally incompetent or deceased veterans this bill Is being introduced tn lit forty two
