| Show gaary GRAHAM BONNER IT haw THE CHINESE WELL douglas and dorothy took a walk one afternoon through a park they both thought the park was a beautiful one with its lakes and its trees its greenhouses and its animals of the menagerie they came to n tower and uncle john said we are going to visit the well today what well undo uncle john asked dorothy the chinese well uncle john an under a large glass cover they saw the well and before they did anything else they started to walk down the stairs to tho well r how queer it Is to walk down steps to a well remarked dorothy it makes me a little nervous she ab added after a moment 1 I almost believe ive gone far enough douglas and dorothy could look still farther down and see how the stair case went around in a queer wind the park was a beautiful ono one ing way until it reached tin an engine which helped the well to do its work after they had looked at it tor for a time douglas said it does docs seem strange to walk down to a well instead of just sending down a bucket on a rope and to think that we walked down those steps said dorothy 1 I feel very very bravel brave 1 when they were back again uncle john told them that the well came from a spring they need an engine to help the spring do its work he said for you see this well supplies the park with water the well supplies all this exclaimed douglas as he be waved out his arms toward the park how flow can it do tell me uncle john but jnet jn it what does the park need of water wafer asked dorothy it the rain keep the grass green in the spring and fill the hollow stones for the birds no uncle john replied they need more water than the rain this well keeps feehly supplied all the little drinking places through the park and the workmen use it in keep ing the park fresh and nice but to think laughed dorothy that the well Is so deep that they have to give it a staircase if it a well with water I 1 suppose give it fire escapes they do such wonderful things in this city she ended |
