Show to our state leaders and law makers by J JP P MAY the ithe uintah basin needs help most important road has been long delayed this is main part of the colorado river eiver watershed 1 why we need nead help 1 previous to 1905 when he indian reservation servillon rc was opened f coir I 1 aho the veople people of A ashley sh ley valley settled in 1873 were practically the only white people in southeastern sort heastern utah they were and many are in the livestock business the only avocation that offered a living when the reservation was opened only genuine homesteaders could take land thousands of people came and now in the entire utah part of the basin we have after the large influx ot of settlers to get the new lands pro gress was slow although a gradual growth Is perceptible it is not what it should be several thousand have left either because of adverse financial conditions or because of in business and otherwise new settlers coming lit in each year only slightly larger in number than those leaving far texas california idaho canada and other places people came here convinced that only a short time would be hecei sary eary to build one good state toad into this Us lt country even it if a railroad were delayed this basin is the civils share of the colorado river watershed mea is utah there Is lares or reclaimed reclaim id td jand land provided with excellent water rights acres additional cheap land and water some of it partly ready and more land with water that will now con compare pare with wilu irrigation projects in any western state in price per acre tor for reclamation this will be beabout about 35 per cent of all the farm land provided with water that utah may ever use because our state is cropping annually about acres this former reservation is settled by genuine homesteaders generally with little capital strangers with stran strangers geri it might be said that this is the outstanding feature and that it is a weakness in mastering the big job of a state road over the submit during one third of the year our freight is seriously delayed this winter we have now gone two weeks without freight or express over the mountains and we had no n 0 mail for several days we have bonded ourselves abbat the legal limit tor for roads and the main road over the summit is too much for us even on a 2476 24 76 federal road basis our total assessed valuation tor for the two counties is approximately fourteen million dollars we are from 60 to miles or more from a railroad diversified agriculture adri culture is the only kind that will pay us but we may not progress along aloag this continued on page three TO OUR OUE STATE LEADERS AND LAW MAKERS continued from page one line without one good road leading to business aad cultural centers or toward Colora colorado dc to denver deliver dairy cows now give us a halt half million dollars per year but this industry demands tran transportation regular and reliable this Is only one of several industries that require reids we may raise beet beef cattle and sheep without a good irate ta te road roaul but that means big ranches not genuine homesteaders baders that was the early day view and practice but that time has passed it t will pay utah tot to help utah has a surplus population and for more than thirty years this surplus has been settling new land outside ot of utah this has taken capital as well as people this liase has land and water for 75 5 more people at least this increase in population would add wany nany lons to our assessed vil bation at leat one hundred million other very important wealth will justify this estimate it if we seem top too but we are here pleading the cause of farmers and ranchers Is utah obligated to help white river water is not used at all in utah but Is just as escalante saw it the duchesne river Is only partly utilized tor for irrigation these are our two largest streams Is there anything like this left anywhere in the tain country the altitude Is just right spring plowing is as early in the large central sections it it in utah county it adt earlier utah has made little effort to help us master the isolation by getting a road over the western alm rimy colorado has done much to open that part of this topographic unit at present the people here are in many ways completely cut off from their states business azid and cultural centers Is this fair to utah does it not seem all the more unfair when we realize that despite these disadvantages we are growing and will soon have people such a bit big area of cheap land and water under ideal condition except for this road will be settled up without any its ar ands many people hero here now dont bg be settled up without any ifa is or other larger centers as essential to their lives they have got along without atheni and this sumber will grow as it is gr grooving dwing unable to help ourselves master the difficulty one eternal problem that Is a a r road oad over the wasatch range w wo must have help or proceed as wo we arc this procedure is not good tor for utah oh ch not as it should be Is it not time to help ashley valley has endured extreme isolation for forty nine years about sixteen thousand people or 01 this ahls former reservation have bave erl twenty two years for transportation this is notwithstanding the fact that many thousands have left in that time because they did not care to contend with disadvantages we have that distance and bad roads make there is now nov a railroad to cedar city and a railroad has operated many years through sanpete county and on to marys valo utah needs this largo large body of land and these rivers they mean homes wealth stability progress Is it not time that our law makers and big men of our state should find a way whereby we ripy secure one good acuto and truck road over the wasatch range this would mean immediate growth here and all the lands now provided with cheap water would be farmed TK the one gr ar the one great obstacle would be sI dived B ved mr air lawmaker law maker and an d you nien men 0 ot financial and intellectual force in our does this not denland your serious consideration consider atlon
