Show UINTAH BASIN THE GREATEST PART OF UTAH is GROWING tiie tie biag biggest est growth in population and wealth is now started next five years will sm wonderful Deve development all we need is optimists advertising and fair weather by J P MAY recently it was shown that there is acres in our two counties which is actually in ill addition to this we have acres partly reclaimed in process of reclamation la or projects that are cheap and must be completed making acres of cheap land this is the cheapest land and water in the west the most reliable water sup ply this gives about fifteen acres of laud land actually reclaimed per capita and a total of cheap land reclaimed and which will be reclaimed very soon of over twenty acres per capita when the basin Is included about 20 per cent of all the land in utah that is reclaimed it is only about two and one halt half acres per capita or exclusively of the basin about two acres if we take off land that Is alkali too rough soil conditions interfering with good farming or the many conditions that govern in such a diversified country we still have a large acreage to be liberal to be fair let us say we have ten acres per capita actually in use reclaimed water right paid tor for and everything ready except enough help people we will be equally liberal and say that when our cheap land is all ready that we will have fifteen acres ot of net land ready for farming use this liberal treatment will satisfy the most skeptical these statements mean more than they might indicate at first glance and deserve further consideration during the last twelve years the writer has noticed among the average citizens a feeling of 0 expectancy expect ency regarding a railroad raili oad and at times a spirit of despondency th this is alternate optimism and pessimism has been a gibat handicap I 1 it t la is now twenty years since the farmers started to till ground on the former reservation and twenty one years since it was actually opened tor for bett settlement lement we have suffered much bank failures and livestock changing hands the owners going to the wall and thousands of our cattle driven out we have done the best we could in getting something else front from which we could realize each for paying taxes interest water assessments and in some way make a living we all know the products which have helped us to do this today there is more genuine optimism than ever before what we need most is a little more ot of this same spirit let us throw away all ideas of a railroad and get down to business as it actually is and not as some dreamer would have it we have troubles enough to keep the faim bureau and all other organizations interested and busy most ot of the farmers have troubles of some kind hind or another lite life is made up ot of a large proportion of 0 trouble and we seem to thrive on natures allotment the fact is that too much ease and comfort la is not good lor for health or progress in any way under the tropical sun in india arabia and many islands ot of the atlantic and pacific coast we see sec what ease and comfort do that is produce dreamers some people call it the esoteric the people of the uintah basin live in a white man mans s climate where the rigors of both summer and winter are noticed and appreciated ease and comfort are not essential to the white mans life except in moderate degrees the uintah basin is now ready for gibat shildes let every farmer be a booster every merchant both a booster and a worker we show such infantile weakness k on the road question taking agh what is handed out to us as though thou we were little children and not doing anything except kissing the hand which does the handing out it is time that we should more than cry like children and then kiss hiss as it were those who give us that which in only our own shall we not like teal men fight in a businesslike business like way for that which Is just and right this same spirit carried into our daily lives will produce results promote health prolong life and secure additional citizens to handle this overload over load of ie 10 claimed land writer during the last six months has had some responsibility in discussing dis cusing with spec tives land buyers we found that these prospective settlers were not thrilled by the spirit of welcome and that they found knockers among all classes some men are anxious to sell their farms and do anything to injure the neighbors place this does not help them at all quite the contrary let us have boosters boasters bo it if everybody will boost and if we ill all show determination to handle these problems which no one will handle tor for us then progress is assured because our cur citizens are so widely scattered holding on to such a wide area it Is not unnatural that we should be tar far apart in actions which demand cooperation unity after these many years of isolation privation actual suffering we are still without a railroad still without a good road anywhere for either the wagon or the auto is it not time that we should study the situation it if zions national park and similar won herlands der lands may receive gibat sums of money to satisfy the railroad companies and cedar city and tourist agencies of salt lake city do we not have a just right to ask that the uintah basin shall have some help the uintah basin is growing and it is growing more rapidly than most people realize we may easily increase this growth by the addition ot of new citizens farmers who are arc educated to do teal leal farming rather than ranching men who will help us bear the burdens and solve the problems the growth ot of our population ula tion and natural additions are very encouraging but we need more of this new citizenship that comes with determination with new ideas and capital we know that when this acres of very cheap land and water shall have been put into genuine cultivation or even a major part of it that population alone will demand a railroad branch line or through line the uintah basin is now something like a man climbing a rope who is tired ills his hands sore and nearly to the bean beam tor for which he has striven let us not give up when we are nearly to the goal and only a little effort will give us some independence and comfort tor for which we have worked so hard we need more genuine boosters boasters bo more determined to organize to ignore personal likes and dislikes to get into the harness and do their honest share in the U 13 1 I C in the tarm farm bureaus in the commercial clubs and in all organizations where men assemble tor for mutual advantage let us ug throw this dont care spirit away this old habit of letting the other fellow do it WE must do it no angels no brotherly love no god fathers are going to put us on the map it Is up to us we should be thankful that we are now numerous enough with enough capital and experience to solve our major problems if we but unite under a spirit of determination and cooperation but we are growing anyway we may let lei things slide along as the dark races would do this Is not the white mans way not the anglo saxon manner of doing things let us ua be true to the anglo saxon blood which we represent |
