Show immense growth of uintah basin alfalfa seed industry impresses visiting experts prominent eastern agriculturists inspect region where best alfalfa seed is grown never in its history has the uin tall tali basin had such a valuable opportunity port unity for advertising as that afforded by the visit of a delegation of eastern seed experts educators and agriculturists who made a tour of the basin tuesday investigating its resources and possibilities the distinguished visitors piloted by members of the price chamber of commerce reached roosevelt monday evening they were met at the gipson hotel by a reception committee headed by mayor C L ashton shortly afterwards they were banqueted at the roosevelt city hall where mayor ashton welcomed the guests to the basin tuesday at 83 8 SO 30 A al M the party traveling in twelve cars guided b by ross bartlett and richard cropper of the peppard service made a one hundred mile inspection trip of the basin the first stop was three miles south of roosevelt where from the hill above phillips farm a panoramic kramic view of the independence country and the south roosevelt valley was obtained at this point mr air bartlett gave a talk on the beginning of the alfalfa seed industry in the basin and of the remarkable growth of 1000 per cent of the seed crop in three years three years ago said mr air bartlett the total seed crop of the basin was only pounds while last year the basin produced pounds the party then went east cast and north to the experimental farm of C H wilkinson that one year ago was only weeds and waste land but is now producing excellent crops of and other crops a telling testimony of the value of expert methods of farming mr air wilkinson Wl lkinson has successfully managed the seed campaign of peppard seed company tor for three years and has been a constant promoter of uintah basin development during that period the next advance was northeast aaros the dry gulch where the immense dept depth it of roosevelt valley soil was noted continuing eastward the party stopped at the farm of les eldredge Eldi edge where they went into the fields and examined the soil that has produced an average yield of pounds of alfalfa seed per acre for three successive ive years at the farm of robert hicks they saw dinty acres of alfalfa and a vast field of oats J W nicholson cholson Nl of 0 chicago manager of the eSeed company gave a splendid talk on soil conditions crop pests and destrie the ile weeds they then proceeded to vern all reds farm which commands an excellent view of the northern portion of the roosevelt valley which includes I 1 the allred labrum angus aneus ane us christensen and other farms here they saw the swedish harrow also a barbed wire drag invented by amos allies maxfield and adopted by the farmers tor for dragging to eliminate dodder and other weeds and which has also been a big help in fighting the alfalfa weevil mr maxfield gave a talk on the proper use of these implements fort duchesne was the next stop here supt bupt P F A gross talked on indian lands and the success of the indian farmers the party also visited the state experimental farm where john W carlson told of the projects being developed there they continued southeast to the point where the road turns to ouray valley Ile IIer eB reB 0 0 colton jr told of possibilities of this th a valley of acres of arable land only 2000 acres of which is at present under cultivation they were met at the divide overlooking ashley valley by george W cahoon Ca lioon who told of its unbounded resources and possibilities banqueted at vernal venial at twelve the members of the party were banqueted at the commercial hotel being guests of the uintah club dr homer E rich presided and gave the adress of welcome the vernal band furnished music for the occasion met by lapoint farmers leaving lea ving vernal at 2 p in the party drove through the north west part of the valley thence south to deep creek bench overlooking lapoint here they were greeted by appreciative farmers of that section C F barnum of the michigan farm bureau seed service introduced trod tred the visitors A C harmston of roosevelt told of the coming of the peppard seed company to the basin C A thompson of lapoint welcomed the visitors and also told of the resources of his section of 0 the basin carl R Alar marcussen cussen of the price chamber of commerce showed that the problems of carbon and emery counties were similar to those of duchesne and uintah counties ile he also talked of the value of cooper co oper aaion with the basin people 0 E bradfute president of the american federation of farm bureaus gave a stirring address C J hacking and chorus sang uintah blues each visitor was presented with a copy of this song the party continued on to aridell tridell and whiterocks where they visited the indian school and the trading post returning turning le from there to roosevelt velt celebration at ards plant perhaps the most spectacular part of the uintah basin advertising program was the evening entertainment at the peppard seed plant the vernal band gave a splendid concert conceit from 7 to 8 p in james A melville uncle jim opened the meeting and introduced L J peppard president of the peppard seed company who thanked the farmers failers for their confidence and support in the new contract campaign assuring them that the company would put forth every effort to do its part hearty applause followed his encouraging greeting C F bar nura was made chairman of the meeting H L westover nestov er of the department pait part ment of agriculture V 11 C rather secretary of the al michigan crop improvement association and assistant superintendent of the international ter hay and grain show at chicago F P J cox instructor in the farm crops department of the michigan state college and pres pies 0 E bradfute Brad tute addressed the meeting the keynote of their message was that the east Is looking to utah tor for alfalfa seed because that seed is far better adapted to prevailing climatic conditions than is the imported seed they also 0 protective laws that would make it impossible to pass off imported seed as a home product they also encouraged couf cou raged aged the production of 0 grimm and hardigan varieties of alfalfa seed because of its superiority in comparison with the commoner varieties blood tells in alfalfa seed as well as in livestock many failures I 1 in the alfalfa industry can be traced to interior inferior stock mr air bradfute Brad tute in his concluding remarks left the decorative scheme used was an additional advertisement of the basins possibilities alfalfa seed in the burr and second crop exhibits formed the keynote of th eplan the walls and pillars were covered with splendid exhibits which spoke of the wealth alfalfa seed is bringing to our basin between the mills tables filled with fruit and vegetables were arranged pears plums peaches apples apricots grapes currants raspberries rasp berries goose berries and tomatoes were there some of these were produced at an altitude of feet showing the possibility of this section also becoming a great fruit growing country the vegetable stands were especially attractive showing g the splendid possibilities of truck gardening the exhibits of james C allred and george wardle of lapoint were no because of their wide variety hancock ancock II brothers of the cove and also boneta had splendid exhibits indian curios especially interesting to the visitors were used as the background for the speakers stand and consisted of priceless navajo blankets bead work leather work and baskets the indian dance which was a feature of the program was greatly enjoyed the indians were almost childlike in their enthusiasm thusia sm and danced repeatedly for the clamorous audience the braves were picturesquely dressed in all the splendor of their native costume the arch of the stand was formed of interwoven old gold crepe and goldenrod against a background of asparagus fern makini making a pretty effect while the wealth of floral exhibits proclaimed that this is a land of flowers and sunshine mrs airs R ar smith was largely responsible for the decorations which greatly added to the effectiveness of the celebration the delegation was given in their one day sojourn in the basin a splendid review of our resources our possibilities and our ambitions the hasty tour of the two counties where they viewed the farms and homes of the citizens the enthuse abic gathering of nearly three thousand people the wide variety of exhibits hibits the splendid hospitality extended to them al will make a vivid impression ot of the basics unlimited wealth and of her progressive citizenry august ath can well be
