Show KS or arat HAD STATE STALE Se ClAB to the editor of the roosevelt standard dear sir I 1 cant retrain refrain from commenting on J W bastians letter in the roosevelt standard ol of jan I 1 think it is a very good letter insofar as it presents both sides of a problem and suggests a possible remedy I 1 also think his suggestion tor for the individuals who are interested in the matter to address a personal letter to our representative senta tive is excellent and the most effective way ot of drawing attention but while studying the alfalfa problem I 1 think it would be well not to go crazy over it and forget all about our old friend the honey bee I 1 am satisfied that the laying out ot of arsenic poison and bran dose kills the bees but it greatly depends on what condition the brood is in a i the time the poison dolsot to 13 laid out and I 1 do not think that the poison will exterminate the bee industry in fact I 1 am of the opinion that it will survive the alfalfa seed industry but B u t it has given the bee keepers of the south in the cotton belts a hard knock and it has done the same here though perhaps not in all the places now I 1 am not trying in any way to knock the seed industry mr bastian has explained the troubles of the seed growers and I 1 am in my humble way only trying to explain the troubles of the honey producers and it possible to alleviate them what I 1 would like to suggest is that we organize a local company to buy bottle and can all the honey produced in the uintah basin wu have the greatest grandest grands gran debt bt and best opportunity that any like lika community of people ever had to dispose t it at double and triple tho the present market value and at the asame ume lima make the uintah basin more famous than milwaukee I 1 guess that this statement calls tor for some explanation I 1 esfer to the tourist trade it we place honey to fo sale at every service station in the basin basia in a convenient and attractive form and encourage the sale of 0 it in every way we can that honey will be carried to the camp grounds and its merits commented on with nore ilore force and conviction than na can be put into any literature it will be ba carried to all parts ot of the united states stales and years and years after people will continue to tell each other about the beautiful honey they got when they were out in the uintah basin why do we allow jobbers to come in here and dictate the price of honey to us then go back home and make per cent profit and then than build up a reputation on a product that nature has endowed us with the knocker will vill say that we could not handle all the honey ot of this district I 1 think we e could but is it not absolutely necessary to make a start it we could induce th the e banks to cooperate in the interest of the community the problem would be solved and in my opinion it is the only way it can be solved because the per pero interests and needs of 0 the bee keepers are too conflicting and too urgent to ever hope lor for honest operation cooperation co in buying honey there is comparatively little risk it Is as old a commercial commodity as gold and lii iii the matter of 0 it will compare favorably with silver this may seem like reckless exaggeration but it we look back over the past SO 50 years I 1 think you will find that the difference Is not very great it Is true that it takes up more storage room but then again it is not quite so easy tor for to get away with it 1 now 0 w my dear reader it if this strikes you as feasible and favora favorably blu give it all the boost you can be it little or much just think what a benefit it would be to this community to triple the income from honey and that is just what it would do and it we can succeed in organizing a company to buy and bottle honey I 1 would venture to predict predl ci that every cent ot of money spent in buying honey would be back in the banks in less than DO 80 days we are not getting OUT our due and I 1 can see no valid reason why we should not try lor for it Sol soliciting feltIng your cooperation I 1 am yours truly GEORGE MADDEN |
