Show w K x o K e w e K KEEPING WELL OPEN THE WINDOWS DR K tt GRIEN editor ot of TH K KS W t K t M K D the summer bummer I 1 spent a month in a village la in northern michigan the old lady la in whose house bouse I 1 stayed was the widow of the village pest postmaster master and had llred lived in that town for forty years naturally she bhe knew every man woman and child in the place and all the details of their lives for a month I 1 was entertained by a first hand band history of the town and its inhabitants people are much alike everywhere the story of our lives la Is about the same north and south bouth east and west whether we live in town or country A great city as 0 henry showed in his stories Is only the town multiplied many times over but as I 1 listened to tha old ladys stories of the people and doings in this little village I 1 was surprised at the number n of people she told me about who had bad died of consumption yet this little town Is a health resort it Is 14 sai rounded by pine forests it stands on sandy soil where drainage la is easy and effective its water supply Is remarkably pure coming from artesian wells of unusually good water the houses are scattered there Is abundance of pure air and sunshine the winds off the great lake are fresh and stimulating there are no factories to pollute the air the people are mostly farmers or village shopkeepers slop keepers and ore are of good sound american stock what la is the reason for the large amount of this dread disease the reason I 1 think Is that while there Is aai an abundance ot of pure air outside the people keep their doors and windows tightly shut the winters are ion long and severe la in this part of the coquetry cou country Etry so the tha houses are tightly built As soon as eo cold wea weather comes the houses are banked u up storm doors and windows are put on every crevice by which cold could enter Is tightly sealed up and the people live all winter in stove and furnace heated rooms |
