Show THE nume HOME RADIO how to make and use it cap bya HYATT VERRILL 1 by VP A dub 0 VIII MORE ABOUT AERIALS if there are several sending stations at various points from jour your set it Is often a very good plan to run several aerial wires at right angles or radiating as shown in figures 11 and 12 connecting them together arid and running the leadin lead in ln from the point where all join us shown sometimes this principle may be reversed and several lead ins may be carried from tile the outer ends of the radiating aerials and joined to form a single leadin lead in and will bring een better results figures 13 and 14 these several lead ins may be connected by means of an anchor ring figure 15 35 to equalize tile the waves or currents or they maya may be provided with multiple point swit switches clies as shown in rigs figs 13 and 14 tills this switch arrangement ran gement has tho the great advantage that you can largely cut out stations yuu you do not wish to hear by using the leadin lead in ln towards the station you desire to hear this will result in the others being fainter or weaker in comparison and they can therefore be more effee I 1 b aj s 4 4 fir Is tuned out by your trist instruments aerials tire are most peculiar affairs and a little experimenting will enable you to determine the best size i height and type to us use e it Is well known that wireless waves are directive or in other words that they travel na mare re strongly jn in one direction away from ithe sending aerial than in others and while this hm been largely obviated in up 0 to hite stations ions yet yet the Ird ordinary inary receiving aerial Is and will I 1 got t 1 stronger signals i if alx the e leadin lead in ln Is twi towards lards the sending I 1 stu sturlon Alon or Is pointed towards it so to speak I 1 know of i several cases where amate amateurs urd failed utterly to hear voices mus music leor or even telegraphic spark signals from some station and bet ct merely by altering the direction of their aerial or the position of the leadin lead in they could hear everything perfectly so you see a great deal may depend upon tile simple aerial even if it consists of only a single sagle wire on oil the other hand ninny many amateurs have obtained splendid results with a wire run around the walls of a room near the cei ceding ing a wire run through a hallway a wire dropped down an air shaft or elevator shaft or even eved from an all iron bedstead or bedspring it all depends so much upon local and climatic conditions surroundings roun dings and other conditions that no hard and fast rules con can be made but despite all this nine times out of ten a high aerial well above surrounding buildings and from IK to feet long will give the best le but i that if there are elevated tracks steel bridges trolley lines electric wires or steel structures near you should run your aerial at right angles to them mem in order to avoid failure through leakage or inductance you roust must atso also bear in mind that tile the ground Is almost as important as the aerial for without a good ground the set will not work A water steam or gas pipe will usually make an all excellent ground but before using it be sure there Is no insulated joint between the connection of your wires all and the earth or that the pipe does not enter an earthen or tile pipe noir the ground or la in the cellar in making the ground connection scrape the pipe clean and bright aud and solder the wire to it if this Is not lot possible wind the connection with will tinfoil tin foil foll and fine xiii and wrap it with adhesive tape where no pipe Is available carry the ground wire to a sheet of copper an ui old 1 I co copper 11 boiler or a copper tank or ausin filled with charcoal find and burled buried at ica least t five feet under the surface of tile earth A lightning rod or fire ebeare will sometimes make a very good ground for aut I 1 t it its ils not so much what you on use for a ground 1 I as aa how bow good tile the connections are re and how well the object la Is grounded do not use lin an electric light or telephone telegraph or door bell ire for a ground to repeat be careful of your connections and sure of your grounding |
