Show OED yu m 2 i V CONTROL CHERRY LEAF SPOT most serious disease affecting foliage can be checked by three thorough sprayings Spray ings prepared by the united states department ot of agriculture wide widespread pread occurrence this season or of cheery leaf spot the most serious disease affecting the foliage of cherries in the eastern united states and which Is destructive in some of the central states directs the attention of fruit growers to methods of fighting it while it is too late in most instances for thorough treatment this season it is not too late I 1 for or the third application of the remedy which Is made after tile the cherries are picked and is of benefit it is not lot too early to prepare for next nest season by studying the control measures which are described in farmers bulletin 1053 recently published by the united states department of agriculture giving the results of experiments carried on in michigan throe three sprayings spray ings with lime ilme sulphur solution or bordeaux mixture will control the disease says the department the first application should be made as soon as the petals fall the second about throe three weeks later and the third immediately after the fruit is picked omission of any one of the three results in serious foliage loss when the disease is not severe especially in the south it may sometimes be controlled by spraying three weeks after the petals have fallen and directly after the fruit has been picked but the omission of any of the three applications Is always attended with risk upon affected leaves the disease arst appears as small purplish spots which later turn brown these spots are usually circular but several may be so close together as to form a large irregular area A corky tissue is formed around the affected areas which drop out giving the appearance of shot holes a name often given to the disease badly injured leaves turn torn yellow and fall A tree severely attacked in the early spring falls to mature its fruit which may continue to hang on in it a semi mature condition throng throughout bout the season in mild cases only a a few leaves are injured but frequently infections are so numerous that the tree Is defoliated by midsummer leaf spot is caused by a fungus which passes the winter in the fallen leaves whence it infects the new leaves the following sea season son by means of spores in the experiments conducted by the department in michigan various sulphur and copper preparations both 1 X le 14 4 VJ Z awl N IN e A rk X L leaf spot of cherry and homemade were used but of all the spray materials tested auty lime sulphur solution and bordeaux mixture gave satisfactory results trees sprayed with self 1 l lime sulphur were almost as badly diseased as the sprayed trees bordeaux mixture used in combating loaf leaf spot Is composed of three thre a pounds of bluestone four pounds pound ot of lime and fifty gallons of water but it should be used only on sour varieties as it burns the foliage of sweet varieties severely when lime ilme sul ebur solution is used it should he be made by diluting 1 gallons of the stock or commercial solution with CO 50 gallons of water for sour varieties 0 of cherries an and d fo for r s sweet c cherries h ei ti e s one che ario les one gallon of t the s stock to 1 solution alu tl 0 n t to 60 gallons of water will control the disease aud and cause very little injury to the foliage for the control of insect debts two pounds of ur arsenate senate of lead paste should be added to each CO gallons of spray in the first two applications |
