Show DADDYS RIK ripy TALI AL I 1 M BRAVE BEAUTY there was a little dog named beauty said daddy and this dog was a fox terrier ive always loved fox ox terriers said bald nancy they are my favorites they are usually so brave and loyal too added nick are you going to tell us a story about one who was brave daddy yes chimed in nancy was beauty a very brave dog and did he do something very fine ile he did indeed said daddy tell us about him wont you asked nick oh yes we must hear about beauty now that we know he was a brave B beauty auty oh ob most c certainly n we m must st berfal aly we dy hear about him n now e eh daddy ad asked nancy to be sure you must both hear the story of beautys bravery and that Is the story I 1 had planned to tell you this very evening goodle goodie 1 exclaimed nick and nancy and daddy commenced beauty was black and white he was more white than lie he was black though for his little body was white find and the black was to be found in spots which the children who owned beauty thought were very beautiful one ear was black the other ear was partly so and in the center of the forehead was another hinck black spot they thought he was such a beautiful little puppy when he be first came to them that hat at once they named him beauty now this family with the three children and beauty lived on a house boat in a big river the house boat had two stories one upstairs where the bedroom was and downstairs where the kitchen and dining room and living room were at night the two boys boya and their little sister would go upstairs to bed and they had two little rooms adjoining then later on the mother and daddy would go upstairs and last of all beauty would settle down in a corner of the sofa which was fixed for him tile the last thing at night this corner was well covered with a comfortable old shawl so that beauty would be happy and cozy fill all night of course he would take naps during the evening as the family chatted and talked and played games but hla his real everd evenings sleep would begin when all the rest of the household was peacefully dreaming rimIng find and he would have a long long night of rest and wonderful dog dreams and then in the morning he would wait outside the doors of the childrens rooms and hope every minute that he would hear bear them getting up and calling him and opening the door for on many of these wonderful it 4 what Is it beauty summer mornings they had had swims near the shore and how bow they all enjoyed them but it was night and everyone was in bed it was fill all so still but beauty sleep there was wag a strange smell which made his head feel so queer and as if he almost breathe sniff sniff went ills his little nose in the air and still he understand it but he knew there was something quite wrong about it and it reminded him of the stove yes that was it the gas stove when it was being lighted to cook the dinner but that strange smell had never been so strong and had never kept up for such a time there was wag danger in that smell ile he knew if and he sat urk un straight in the darkness and wondered what could be done lie ile ran into the kitchen and there the smell of gas almost knocked him over por for one a caf ca voul f ul moment he felt ws ns though he would just lie down and llo ile hut but forgetting about the queer feeling in his hend by thinking of those upstairs he ran to the room first of tile the two awu 0 boys and then of their little sister and then to the floor where their mother and dandily slept scratch S c ila r a t c h went ills nails on the dor and then more and more furiously he be scratched lie he whined and he cried find and at last the daddy got up feeling very sleepy alint what Is it beauty he asked do ym want to cora come III u this room were you lonely downstairs its not morning yet you know 1 and then the daddy got ft a terrific whiff ot of gas tile the gas Is escaping in the kit kitchen cherf lie he said and we ire w would nevor never hav e known i it but for you brave beauty auty and as the daddy turned off the gas which hall had nil fill been left on by some dreadful I 1 mistake they till all s said a id it I 1 t was brave peachy who saved our lives 1 |
