Show HOME ECONOMICS WORK TO BE emphasized 1 practical training in all phases of household efficiency arranged for plans plang laid for the coining school year at the utah agri wil tural college which opens september 10 pro vide for unprecedented growth in the school of home economics according to a statement just issued by president peterson the shi dents vl nill be first of all train trained for efficiency ia in the home this does not mean that the girls will receive training only in the preparation and values of foods or ln in the making of hats and clothes important lis as those these subjects are but that they will receive training in the whole problem of household management the many and various problems of child rearing will be developed ve loped including feeding and clothing the infant childrens games diseases of 0 children and studies of child growth find and development the economical feeding of the family will also receive attention and especial emphasis will be laid upon the conservation of foods the immediate elimination ot of waste a problem so BO important at this time will be stress stressed 31 all phases of household management will be studied including buying food for small and large fam lues preparation of food household accounts the home laundry clothing the family in short training in all the principles of family rearing to make the above outlined work ae a practical as possible it Is planned to establish a home economics practice house at the college here girls from the upper classes will live for specified periods of time and perform all the duties of housekeepers under the direction of an experienced matron miss alice Kaven hill an expert in home economics of international reputation will come to the institution tion next nest year as professor of home economics miss Haven hlll has possibly done more tor for the advancement of household science in england canada and the united states than any other woman living her books upon home economics subjects an and d the care of children are considered au an thora tive all over europe and america in discussing her plans tor for the work next nest year at the utah agricultural college miss said for various quite good reasons the scope ot of nome home economics has become unduly restricted to the three main divisions of food clothing and shelter with the result that the nature and possibilities of the individual in the home for whose benefit the study is pursued has been considerably overlooked the applications therefore of the kno knowledge acquired by students have been inadequate and as appears from the public health statistics and the continuance of habits prejudicial to human progress I 1 believe that the remedy lies la in giving much more prominence to personal hygiene and the alie wide range of influences affecting human development at all ages throughout life and to closer ordination coordination co of the subject matter of all the courses one with the kotlier other in order clearly to indicate their connection and to more emphatically insist upon their application to the reformation of habits and the more intelligent conduct of life in accordance with the knowledge now possessed of the necessary details all my long teaching life I 1 have pioneered this method and always with great encouragement I 1 have been urging it through my recent lecture trip ns as first international lecturer on household economics to the colleges and universities of this country and everywhere have had my views and suggestions most sympathetically received the school of home economics provides many baccalaureate courses in the following departments foods and dietetics dol doY neslie nestle art home construction st and sanitation art I 1 flud and music vocational courses are offered in the same departments by close correlation between the te technical clinical courses offered in art music en english and allied subjects a well rounded education can be secured the student secures besides the all important facts of home efficiency fici ency in its broadest phases the cultural training so necessary to fill out the life of the home |
