| Show from page 1 objects I 1 to blocking our resources are a public land state second we have reserved about acres of the best faiming land with the prior water filings for the indian fa banners fan n ners although there are aeo not enough indians to ever farm one half of that amount the government has a big man here supt bupt albert H kneale who is selling a part of the surplus and he is trying with the aid of his energetic assistants to teach the indian to farm but the process is necessarily slow and the land must remain ip a federal reserve for a long time third there is a large area of bench land reserved for indian land they have little use for it but they may use it some day fourth the imperial valley project takes about acres of our choicest land taking the center out of our basin this is taken away from us ostensibly it appears so that some land in california and in old meirco may have water some people have nerve to tell us that they want L to to put in a reservoir up here in utah so that the flood waters of the green river system may be held back in the spring and thus relieve the high water situation down in the imperial valley coun try great talk eh they want to redeem some land down there and have bave uncle sam have utah have the water stored fifth now they wish to reserve acres in utah and acres in colorado adjoining for oil sixth fort duchesne mil military reservation is still the property of the government which with apen A en ed and with gilso gilsonite nite etc reserved makes uncle samuel a far more important man in the birta basin than the sovereign state of utah it would appear that the government really ought to take possession of all this eastern utah country if we could federalize the wb whole ie thing perhaps un cle sam would build a railroad and lease the and to white people if the government would help the poor people who have come out here to make homes instead of hindering them it would smack more of what some people think is the right thing that is paternalism but there is not much relation between paternalism ism and socialization of industries dus tries as carried on in ill eastern utah eastern utah is evidently mapped out by certain federal officers as the reservation par cx excellence cel lence we may hold up timber coal 0 oil il hydrocarbons hydro carbons etc as well as an inland lake and all for the future of the nation except the water and that would be used to redeem some warm land down dow n the mouth of the colorado river the settlers who have moved into eastern utah have a right to object to this federalization of state resources to be a public land state does not mean that such a state must be a reservation what is the real desideratum in this public land state business anyway was it written in the nature of things illings governmental ern mental i that certain states should be owned by the other states or was it the result of certain strife and disagreement among the states interested ested in matters quite different than any 1 thing now before us As a native citizen of utah as s one wh who 0 has bas helped as did hi his parents to kill the snakes es and build the bridges I 1 object to certain bcd realization of utah its all well enough to look off into the future and conserve and reserve our resources but this eastern utah proposition goes too far would it not be showing a better spirit if the government would devise some means for the private 0 ownership and manipulation of eastern utah wealth instead of planning laws whereby this wealth may remain sewed up we ar are getting about to a place where we may show the world what we have ou out I 1 here A railroad would in the natural co urse 0 o f events soon be hauling our coal and hydro car bons down to the co coast we have a right to have a city out here half as large as salt lake and that ere long this is not dreaming it is amply vouched couched for by the plain truth As a citizen of eastern utah I 1 object the people of utah would object if they realized the real facts and especially if they would have printed the genuine facts about that imperial valley reservoir project and a few other things out cut here by J P may secretary of roose velt commercial club in deseret news saturday december 9 1916 |
