Show making a plea pica forr foranoce fo ranore nore house lants especially during the winer months mr emil hansen florist fo the utah agricultural college Jol lege offers the following very very practical suggestions to the housewife during the winter months our homes could with a veryl very ittle i effort be beautified by va rious flowers grown j uch ach as hyacinths tulips frezia and narcissi of various vanous kinds these bulbs should be planted in the cfall and put away in a dark cellar where they may have a chance for root development for not less ahn six li t A ta weeks f 4 before 11 M taking r ing Aj to tife the living v ng room for forcing ir 1 then if one or two bulb pots ire are i set to forcing every two or three the e weeks one can manaloto manage man agoto to keep flowers in the rooms room s from christmas time until spring when flowers begin to Wco rth outside outsider th e j of bulbs outside should be accomplished in the months of october and november hyacinths 1 can be planted in four to five inch pots one bulb id each pot po while tulips and narcissi and other smaller bulbs can be planted in larger shallow pots pots which are manufactured especially for this purpose the number of bulbs that can be planted in such a pot de depends P ends of col course arse on the diameter 9 4 the pot How however everin in an eig eight inch hinch pot seven narcissi and nd eight fb nine tulips can be planted when planting care should be taken that the hole or holes in the botto bottom airl of the pots are arc prop arly covered with rocks ab so that the water wate ican can go through A good soil mixture for bulbs is three parts screened leaf mold or mountain soil oxie one part screened sand and a little sprinkling of bone wood ashes thoroughly the bulbs should replanted be planted so that the top of the bulbs are even with the upper edge of the pot the soil should be firmly pressed around them after which they should be watered thoroughly and placed in a cellar or some dark place watering should be done from time and the soil should never be allowed to become dr dry Y the early varieties such as paper white narcissi roman hyacinths and early tulips can be put to forcing in the house after six gix weeks and may be had in bloom by christmas time it is well to keep the top of the hyacinths covered the first two or three weeks of the forcing period for this purpose an empty pot turned upside down or some similar article may be used this is done to produce a larger flower stem if this is nel neglected elect oftentimes the hyacinths will begin blooming before the flower stem is developed during the period of forcing the bulbs should be given plenty of water for the easter lillies six or seven inch pots hould be used the bulbs should be planted so that their tops are about three inches from the top of the pot and merely covered with abot about it one half inch of soil after the root development has taken place and the top has grown two or three inches high the remaining space in the pot can be filled with well rotted manure the growing of easter lilies require but a moderate heat but it is well to sprinkle the leaves fron from t alre to time |
