Show UNION mm PACIFIC is mm COMING INTO BASIN BASIM judge liage R S lovett chairman of the board of directors was interviewed I 1 in salt lake last week officials of the union pacific railroad railroad company are considering extending a line into the uintah basin according to judge R S lovett chairman of the board of directors of the company who was in salt lake thursday with prest A L mohler of that system and of the oregon short line on their annual trip of inspection spec tion the judge would give no further detail about the proposed extension than to admit that it is contemplated and to mention possible points from which the line run judge lovetts admission today that the company is considering erin the building of a line into the vast undeveloped aas eastern ern part of this state is the first that has thus far been made by a high official of the company utah people generally and uintah ba 1 sin residents and land owners particularly will receive this word with great satisfaction 1 mr lovett and mr mohler together with N H loomis gen oral counsel of the union pacific E E adams consulting engin engineer eez of the road and C T bowers secretary to mr lovett and 1 I D kyle secretary to prest mohler arrived liere here at noon in their private car they went directly to the hotel utah where they took luncheon and later to the offices of the Oregon short t r ih 6 ta f e 0 Y feren ferencek ces with officials official 3 of the lo 10 local company at the hotel judge lovett talked freely of the business situation the general condition of th thi rop iuds the crops of the country and financial conditions odthe probable extension into the uintah basin and the general situ aaion judge lovett said we have had a corps of engineers in the uintah basin this year and while I 1 am not prepared to say when we may begin an extension into that count country ry the officials of the union pacific company are considering it and have been for some time the company is in a financial condition to make extensions that are thought necessary but we have hesitated because we felt that the uintah will be an expensive one I 1 am not prepared to give anything more definite about the matter at this time I 1 will say however that the idea that this company thinks of entering the basin only from a wyoming point is incorrect we could go in through park city arid and that would probably prove a more feasible route Bu business bubines sines S in the e east ast is picking up encouragingly money is plentiful for short time purposes the war orders started the steel business moving and with that many other lines picked up crops throughout the country are fine in kansas and neighboring states the rain injured them some but west they are fine revival of confidence in railroads on the part of the general public is one of the things chiefly needed contrary to what seems to be the general idea there is a limit to the amount of money the roads have and in order to operate regularly they must earn the money with which to do it in order to earn that money they must b be e fairly treated the union pacific this year has been treated baij fairly ly we think and we make little complaint J in i some of the eastern states bo however wever the utilities commissions have passed a 2 cent a mile regulation ul atlon which is wholly un fairno tho the roads A decrease in freak legislation is one of the main main hopes of the roads judge lovett said that business n ess in the west has not improved so much as in the east there has beep been good passenger business this season he said and there seems to be more freight business now crops along the union pacific are good he said but he expressed a doubt concerning the maket condition declaring that the matter of getting ships to export products is a serious one judge lovett and his party will be in salt lake for two days according to present plans and will then leave for idaho and wyoming deseret evening news |
