Show TWENTIETH QUARTERLY conference one of the most interesting sessions ever held in duchesne county the twentieth quarterly conference of the duchesne st stake ce of zion was held at myton on september and in connection with the duch duchesne esne county fair then in progress there were present of the general authorities elder geo F richards of the quorum of the apostles and oscar A kirkham and agnes campbell representing the general boards of mutual improvement associations the conference convened at 10 a in on saturday and the first session was devoted entirely to the work of the mutual improvement associations the time being used by the visiting representatives of that department in giving concrete and specific instruction and illustration of the work outlined for the coming year no meetings were held on saturday afternoon or evening the time being left open to the people to attend the fair and amusements provided by the committee under the auspices of the fair association the program arranged for the sunday services was designed to be specially commemorative of three important events the opening of the uintah indian reservation to settlement august 1905 the organization rf of the duchesne stake of zion september 14 1910 and the corn com in ing of the angel moroni to the r prophet joseph smith on september 1823 a decade having elapsed since the op opening erling of the reservation a half decade since gince the organization of the stake and this being the day act apart by the genealogical society of utah for exercises corn coin inemer alve of the last named event A convention of the officers of the 11 1 I A and religion class via workers kers was held at 9 a in each department being separately instructed ted in its special line of work at 1030 a m the general conference meetings began the commodious hall generously placed at the disposal of the people for the occasion being well filled and there being present besides the appointed visitors all members of the stake presidency as also all members of the stake presidency of uintah stake nearly all members of the high council and very good re presenta eions from all the wards and branches of the stake also su perin albert H kneale in charge cf indian affairs at fort duchesne eig eighteen gh teen prominent idiana ten of whom occupied po fictions on the rostrum and other prominent local people representative of the work of the indian department after the usual opening exercises president ephraim lambert gave a brief account of the creation of the reservation in 1851 by governor brigham young of the efforts leading up to its opening and of the present state of development along the lines of material commercial and educational progress elder william oneil spoke of f the organization of the duchesne duchesne stake of zion giving comparative data showing it ita growth in population wealth and organized community life during the five years of its existence superintendent kneale told of the progress of the indians during the past ten years giving statistics showing the large amount of hay and grain and other products raised by them the machinery and implements they were using without the aid of the whites and of their general material progress but he also stated that the greatest change that had come to them was from within and it consisted in their changed attitude and feeling relative to the land and water their newfound love for their homes formerly mr kneale said they did not care for the future had no anxiety as to what might become of their children now they were keenly alive to the benefit of holding bolding and owning both land and water and having it pre preserved served to their posterity the greatest drawback to their progress he said the most difficult problem with which the department had to grapple was the curse of whiskey and he closed his remarks with a strong appeal for operation cooperation co in his efforts to keep it from them elder geo F richards spoke briefly of the beliefs of the latter day saints on the subject of I 1 the origin of the indians of our friendship for them and of our belief as to their future destiny at 1230 p in a 1 special social priesthood meeting was was held at which the business part of the conference was considered at two p in the regular conference services were again resumed and after the opening exercises sister arbetta 11 holgate gave an account of her attendance at the international genealogical congress congre ss at t san francisco in july she having been there as 4 a delegate from this stake and of the work in progress in this stake under the direction of the relief society organizations of which she is president elder george F richards then addressed the meeting giving an historical account of the coming of the angel moroni to the prophet joseph smith giving a brief account of the early life of the boy prophet his search for truth and of the reward that car came no as the result of that diligent effort quoting extensively from both ancient and modern modem scripture in support of his great mission elder richards then urged the people to diligent and persistent effort in behalf of their kindred dead that they become members of the genealogical society and that they then make free use of the extensive volumes and records of that organization an evening meeting of the mutual improvement associations and the religion classes was held at p in there being present a goodly attendance and rn much uch interest being manifested very respectfully
