Show i roosevelt utah april editor standard in his anxiety to get into print vice president H P ottosen of the board of education has come to some very hasty conclusions as shown by his hia recent unwarranted personal 8 attack t upon me in the county papers the article he attacks in in his don quixote fashion is not an attack on the schools as he says and was not written in any such attitude taxpayers who send their children to school in this county and not outside as mr ottosen did last year asked my views on this proposed special tax levy and then repeatedly repeated urged me to state them in the papers I 1 did so in the light of the articles since published 11 I 1 still doubt the wisdom of voting this additional five mill spec lal tax there is a limit beyond which it is unwise for school officials to ask the support of the taxpayers when that is passed once even extremely pressing needs will be disregarded thereafter by the voters one of the greatest arguments advanced in favor of county school consolidation was that less revenue would be required to run the schools yi mn ottosen admits that the expenses will be increased about one sixth next year treas aurer A F maxwell told us in the reservation news nes recently that additional revenue wi will 11 come from the state slate of about to 27 over last year and that pressing old debts of must be paid here is enough to pay them now if the expenses next year will be increased why ask that the taxes be increased five sevenths or to nearly double those of last year the board in their estimate as published say that the regular seven mill tax on the new valuation will be equivalent to the last year levy of mills on last years valuation now must we conclude that either the taxpayers have no right to know what public officials do with the taxes or that mr Otto sens record as a board member will not bear investigation if the board is conscientious in the expenditure of school money why does it issue to the teachers their pay warrants before their time sheets sheet sare are signed up by the principals As to mr Otto sens inference that idid edid not perform my duty as to boosting for the high school I 1 wish to inform him that the 5 appropriation he worries over waa was to pay for postage on year books and other advertising matter got out without expense to the board most high schools not only furnish postage but also appropriations for printing literature of this kind to save them expense of printing I 1 have each year written personal letters to the grade school graduates and to all other prospective students whose addresses and names I 1 could secure I 1 have each spring personally visited each grade school with prospective graduates with one or two remote ones as exceptions to talk high school to them in addition I 1 have spent in all several months of my time for which I 1 received no pay making personal canvasses and addre addresses ases in the interest of the r school last fall every town in the county except a few of the more remote was visited by members of the high school faculty to talk up education As to mr Otto sens other insinuations I 1 wish to say simply that persons seldom resort to mudslinging if they have any better argument J F HOYT |
