Show ISO SO THE PEOPLE MAY IW K NOW much misinformation seems to Vs prevalent abent concerning the nes cassity for the 5 mill special i school tax as asked ked for by the board of education the board is in a better tion to know the requirements of i the schools of the county after nearly a years experience and 2 constant study of the needs of i the schools than is possible for the individual who has not made ta t a study of the matter last year the valuation of du chesne county was this year the county assessor estimates tim ates that it will not ru run n over which will be some thing thin more than double that of last year last year the board levied mills regular tax and the county commissioners levied 4 mills additional county school tax this year the board has lev aed 6 mills regular levy and amill 1 abill for payment of interest on bonded indebtedness and under the present law there is no county levy and in order to be able to meet our obligations and d have eight months of school the board tasking is for the special levy of 5 mills milla compare the levy of last year on the assessed v valuation alua tion with the levy desired this year on the valuation then take into account the met fact that we will rall fall rt at at least short of having f funds suf focient to meet all obligations having only s seven van months of school whereas we should have bight d erht months borths of school in order to enable the average pupil to complete a grade in a year of EcIl ool and the further fact that diat additional will be re 3 the year which with their tt text boob books cs supplies fuel ete etc diw will increase the obligations of the tha district at least ono one sixth and you will better understand the conditions cond Wons that confront the beard in their endeavor c to live give to the pupils of 14 h grade schools their dues by way of educational advantages another matter the board has been compelled to borrow 1 r C 00 which becomes due january januar 1917 in u order to pay off old indebtedness this must be tak en care of when it falls due be sides there is additional addition bold old indebtedness that must be taken laken care of j did you ever stop to consider that there are several thousand dollars of old teach teachers erg warrants outstanding issued by the various old districts in payment of teachers salaries some of them dating back two years or more these the duchesne bank will I 1 inake care of and pay at once if the special tax is voted if not who knows when these teachers will get their pay for their work i which ought to have been paid as soon as done A prominent citizen of duchesne remarked to the writer a few days ago why do you not take care of this floating indebtedness debt edness with a bond issue i for the simple reason that when we bond which should be within the next year it will take jake every cent that can call be realized from a bond issue to provide suitable school buildings for al AI tonah boneta mt home tabby neola and all of the other localities that need and must mus have proper school buildings t and there is scarcely a town or community in the county that will not require more school room immediately As regards the funds ar arising ising from the state apportionment we have been unable to get anything definite as to what we may expect from that source everything so 0 o far being mere conjecture along that line last year the state apportionment fell about 1 per capita short of what it had been for some time and this year it will likely be about the same kameas as last when it feir 1611 b below e 9 per capita unless the special tax is voted it will be for the board to run the schools of the county over 5 or C 6 months month and meet the hie obligations thit must be met therefore it behooves parents to wake up to the situation and look aber the W welfare elfare of their children by working and voting for the 5 mill special tax on april 22 yours for better schools E W HARMSTON |
