Show S R BENNION S R bennion well and favorably known in the uintah basin passed way w at his home in vernal late tuesday night november 16 of pneumonia and a complication of diseases the vernal express in part gives the following account of a sketch of his life he was not a sanctimonious man but bt was imbued with a faith as deep as the depths of his great soul to some he did not appear a religious man but in fact he lived each hour of every day and all his days were full each hour according to the precepts of the mock meek and lowly nazarene A powerful man physically and mentally with wonderful perception taking mental note of everything and everybody but keeping his opinions to himself ho he was a friend to all even those he could not admire he would not harm and was willing to grant every man mail the right light to his own opinion ile he was called to this valley ial 1887 as stake president and for 23 years has been the mainstay backbone and balance wheel of this whole community every industry in this community owes its present condition if not its very existence to his wisdom and very liberal financial aid the academy and tabernacle were vere fathered and lib brally aided financially by him and he knew and watched carefully the records of all the students au of the academy from its beginning he was one of the founders of the bank of vernal and for a long time its president was the organizer of the ashley coop co op and was vas until the last year when it changed hands its head he was a director of the telephone company and president of the vernal milling and light company for years he owned a lour flour mill in west jordan where his hiis first wife and lived he was one of the organizers and builders of the north jordan canal and was president and superintendent perin of the north jordan irrigation company lie ho has been in th the sheep business longer than any other man in the state and possibly in the west one characteristic of the greatness of the man has bean demonstrated in his retirement from one high position after another on account of lils liis age and infirmities in stepping down and out to give place to a young youn er man his respect to his successor was avas sincere end and while he stepped steppe d aside he never withdrew nis his support and was ever willing with his long years of experience and mature judgment to render assistance by counsel or advice and material aid if necessary samuel R bennion son of john bennion and elizabeth wainright bennion was born november 1842 at lavoo illinois the oldest of a family of seventeen ten brothers and seven sisters he crossed the plains with his big parents arriving in salt lake october 5 1847 they left council bluffs for utah with five sheep and reached salt lake with one which formed the nucleus of his financial success his father rented a few sheep belonging to other pioneers and set the boy to herding them where the temple and tabernacle now nov stand As salt lake valley became more settled the boy moved his sheep and cattle for by this time his father had acquired the first shorthorn durhams ever brought to utah over into rush valley tooele thoele county ile he has always been a lover of good stock and owned the first standard bred stallion in utah while he has been very successful financially he has devoted a great deal of his time to ecclesiastical sias work having filled a two years mission in illinois indiana and ohio in 1875 76 and later a two years mission to eng land in 1884 86 36 he was called to ashley valley to preside as stake president in 1887 soon after he returned from england he continued in that position uli until when he was honorably relea sied ed I 1 president bennion is survived by his wife agness and I 1 his children enos mrs laura diamond edith elizabeth mrs esther estber stringfellow ethel clyde H HS john samuel R jr viente V ashley and an a n adopted daughter lena |
