Show THE NEWEST COUNTY glen miller of salt lake writes write evlo a glo whig description of northeastern utah conditions in the salt lake tribune of august 15 he says the country is wonderful with a great future assured As 1 I have per perambulated ambulated ambula ted up fifth avenue in new york and wished that I 1 might have a great i fortune so that I 1 could sleep one night in that bed of the st regis I 1 little thought that I 1 might enjoy a night at the st regis for 50 cents in la a name not ilot much in americal america Ameri liffin Li fein duchesne county utah here only a few years ago the fame of one president was exemplified in theodore and another in taft but duchesne county is strictly neutral ando the name of the county seat was changed to duchesne and the other town god save the mark from taft to la point sue suck N a fame the justly celebrated fifty seven varieties of pickles are beaten to pieces by the number of varieties of roads in duchesne county I 1 have hot a vocabulary sufficiently lux luxurious ulious nor diction sufficiently fluid to describe highways and low ways of this latest addition to family of counties yet while oi of picturesque tur esque variety they are far from beiji being the degenerate roads tourists have pictured them the automobile has obliterated their horrors and from salt lake to vernal can now be made in one day without death or disaster parenthetically let me say the automobile changes its character when it leaves the city and gets into mountain or desert an ordinary domestic automobile which in the city cannot go three blocks over a smooth pavement without erupting balking or disintegrating will behave as sweetly as a seminary girl when it gets into the frontier in the city the automobile seems as sensitive and delicate as a swiss watch discoveries are made my town mechanic has found as many disorders and pers in my auto as any fashionable physician has discovered for his rich clients here sn in duchesne county autos have no diseases disease s whatever if a carburetor breaks a vinegar cruet is fastened on with chewing gum and the machine never knows the differs ence any sort of wire or violin string or clothesline will carry carry electricity from the magneto to the beer bottles that are for cylinders and the auto moves along with rhythmic beat the same as ever I 1 wish someone would cross our city breed with the country type of motor it would save me several hundred thousand dollars Jol lars a year in operating my one lone machine but to resume duchesne county this county was discovered last year at the upper forks of a row of rivers that discharge into the strawberry and eventually creep into the green river the green river now is a respectable subdued quiet occupant of the soil lying low and saying little east of vernal it is about seventy feet wide most places it can be waded by horses but not hot by autos like most of eastern utah the green is approaching the dry stage near dry territory this is near dry territory in more senses than one the country itself is nearly dry irrigation ditches low politically it is also near dry only myton of a multitude of northeastern towns is now wet where once the festive bad man loaded up on bad whiskey and di sported himself as road agent or catald raider the peaceful settler is now noa manipulating self binders hay bay rakes and threshers thre occasionally some relic of the old days cornea comes like the groundhog to see the effects of daylight but hastily retires into his hole everyone who visits these parts admits without reservation or equivocation that it has a g great reat future the only question is how near or far that future is to be A whole lot of people like mr erli erb are arc willing to build a railroad into uintah to build a railroad into uintah basin if someone else will put up the money but railroad or no railroad the country is fast filling up the settlers wife no longer has to go sixty miles milea to borrow a cup of flour or of yeast lots of autos are here to shorten distances As fast as the sage is burned off the benches school houses are peeping up here and there bridges real bridges of p planks la k and girders take the pla place c e of thi the e fords banks and bakeries opticians and oculists and other such indications of civil bation jostle each other where a year ago prairie dogs scampered and cream separators are common life ansur nce solicitors are already here and settlers without a full pair of suspenders carry life insurance policies for thousands some peculiarities there are still places up here where it do to talk too much there are fellows who ask to be let alone there are joints and there are individuals adua X who 1 i dont recognize euthin nu thin some autos travel without numbers and still are not molested that just gives a spice to this conglomerate community but again there are live com i mercial clubs tourist rests tennis courts recreation grounds ground parks and other modern modem co conveniences too numerous to mention there are hotels good and bad the good hotels are arc where you would least expect them likewise the bad further deponent mayeth not the indians got the first al lott ment of land and now have neat houses erected on each farm near each such house is a which mr indian with squaw and papoose occupies in preference to the homes our uncle samuel has provided they lease their farms to the whites and enjoy the life of their forefathers likewise in a few years they will disappear as other tribes have before them such a conglomeration of old and new of primitive and up to date on one seldom finds dont let anyone fancy the uintah basin is a 1900 affair it is strictly a 1915 model with 1920 attachments here are towns not a year old voting bonds for water works lighted with electricity and sporting porcelain bath tubs I 1 asked a young doctor whether he found his wife out here on the duchesne no she was born bom here he replied but when I 1 found her she was attending columbia university N Y that brought me out here then I 1 looked at a laboratory with xray X ra ray y machine bacteriological equipment and sterilizing apparatus really it is hard to realize you ire are a hundred miles from the nearest railroad outlook for future but these people are going to have hardships and an assortment of back sets like e very every other frontier settlement have their grasshoppers and early frosts and interest days that cant be met and all that what of it what american settlement from plymouth rock to the present gone through the same but they will come butof it stronger citizens and a 11 generation hence will b be the aristocracy with fine homes and big barns and elegant cloths claths and time to visit the seashore como come quicker than in most places because this day matures luxuries faster than the old ive scattered some up and do down wn this land of the striped flag and have seen the filling up of the western half of this continent not even in the basin where brigham young dropped his pike when he declared here is the place is there such a measure of opportunity fullup full up and running over aa a in ih borth northeastern utah today youn young blood round found the blood that one finds here is ig the young zestful optimistic earnest yet sober young blood it comes from the old homes in utah and it comes from the still older nests along the atlantic from the middle states from down doivo pacific way from everywhere why talk about up to daleness dat eness I 1 saw a young indian la rose go up to the grandstand at the vernal baseball game sat any ano gather up a double handful of dollars from enthusiastic fans who exulted over his home run at a critical moment then he left to go out and ride a reservation ditch during a whole night thirty miles distant does civilization civilize if anyone wants to see the west epitomized to the last word if he be a dreamer of dreams and wishes to witness gladdins Alad dins lamp verified if he feels a question about the patriotism and the virility of our country if he wants an exhibition of the spirit which thrilled the hearts in revolutionary times and later converted the forests the prairies and the deserts into the greatest nation under the sun izo go up one of the numerous forks into the valley of the strawberry and the duchesne and peer into the life of latest county 0 |
