Show Sports In The Open Space Game department spokesmen today reminded sportsmen that applications for three early special spe-cial deer hunts will be accepted beginning July 26 at Deer Permit Sales Offices in Vernal and Manila. Man-ila. The three early hunting areas are the Daggett-North Sheep Creek,, Vernal-Buckskin Hills and Vernal-Coal Miners Basin. Application Appli-cation point for the Daggett hunt is Manila, with Vernal for the other two units. All are similar in that they are to be held for three weekends only (August 6-7, 13-14, 20-21). Each hunt is for an either sex animal. ani-mal. Each was set by the Utah Board of Big Game Control to remove trespass animals in crop damaging areas. One hundred permits per-mits were authorized for each of the three areas. Permits will be sold on a first come, first served basis either by mail or in person until all are sold or until the hunts are over. Applications must include full name and address, choice of hunting hunt-ing unit, big game license number, num-ber, and legal tender in the amount of $3 for residents and $5 for non-residents. The department said the first date when applications for all other special deer permit hunting areas would be acceptable is Aug. 29. Sportsmen were also reminded that only one special deer hunting hunt-ing permiet may be obtained by a big game license holder during any one calendar year. F-&-S Utah marshes this year are producing pro-ducing normal or better populations popula-tions of duck broods, with a decided de-cided decline of 30 or more in numbers of young geese brooded. These facts are shown in a report re-port from a recent ground and airplane survey of major waterfowl water-fowl breeding areas in the state. The Department of Fish and Game said the decline in numbers num-bers of geese would probably call for a reduction in bag limits for the Canada and other geese of the dark species during the coming com-ing fall waterfowl season. It was noted that 90 of all Canada geese harvested within the state are brooded on Utah and Idaho marshes. Idaho counts for this species are also under those of last year. Waterfowl managers say that banding returns indicate overshooting over-shooting is a major reason for the present decline in Canada geese numbers. Another factor contributing to fewer and smaller goose broods this year was the extremely bad weather conditions on the marshes during the March-April March-April nesting season. F-&-S The Salt Springs ponds on the Wendover bombing range near the Utah-Nevada state line have now been opened to fishing under an agreement reached between th Utah Department of Fish and Game and Wendover Air Force Base officials. Because the range is still sometimes some-times used for aerial gunnery practice, fishermen will be required re-quired to obtain a permit from the provost marshal's office on the base each time they enter the springs area. No permits will be issued at such times as the range may be in use. Permits are issued is-sued at no cost. F-&-S The regularly scheduled summer sum-mer meetings of the Utah Fish and Game Commission will be held July 15 and 16 at department depart-ment headquarters, 1596 West North Temple, Salt Lake City. Current and general fish and game business is again expected to make a complete agenda for the two-day sessions. The commission com-mission acts as policy making body for the Department of Fish and Game. All commission meetings are open to the public. |
