New officers sworn in at Layton City Council By DONETA GATHERUM LAYTON After a month of service on the Layton City Council, Coun-cil, LeGrande Simmons says he has learned that city government, especially a city manager form, is very involved. "I must try to sit on two sides the city's and the public's. After evaluating both positions, I am interested in-terested in doing what the public desires," the novice councilman stated. Mr. Simmons and incumbent Kent D. Smith were sworn into office Jan. 4, 1988 by City Recorder Recor-der Steven Ashby. Many city department de-partment heads and other employees em-ployees attended the brief ceremony cere-mony that was held at the city hall. Councilman Bob Stevenson, who was re-elected to a four-year term, took the oath of office at a later time. Mr. Simmons, a Layton native, said many people have contacted him to run for city council for many years. "I have worked with people all my life. I have a strong background back-ground in business and so I decided to try government," Mr. Simmons said. His business experience includes in-cludes seven years with the Lock-hart Lock-hart Company in Ogden, seven years in the banking business locally, local-ly, the owner of two mobile home parks and the owner of Mobile Mansions for 20 years. Getting a road into the industrial area of Layton so that large trucks don't have to travel residential streets is the most important item facing Layton City at this time, Mr. Simmons believes. He said other top priority issues the council is now facing include a fire substation, substa-tion, the traffic on U.S. 89 and other road problems, a cemetery and a new city hall. Mr. Simmons stressed, "I'm not in favor of taxes." Joining LeGrande Simmons on the Layton Council are Bob Stevenson, the senior member of the council who is beginning his seventh year having served one four year term and one two year term, Kent Smith who is beginning his second four year term, Jerry Nebeker and Jerry Stevenson who have both served two years of a four year term. |
