Show Each Ute To Receive Unrestricted Sum, $125 Payment Considered Largest Under Stone Administration Checks for the largest unrestricted unre-stricted payment ever made to the Ute Indians under the administration ad-ministration of Superintendent Forrest R Stone, $125 per person, per-son, will be distributed by the Uintah and Ouray Agency, Monday, Mon-day, Dec. 5, between the hours of 8 a. m. and 5 p. m. at Ft. Duchesne, Whiterocks, Randlett, Ouray and Myton. In making the money available, avail-able, Superintendent Stone, asked ask-ed that the mony in each individual indivi-dual case be spent wisely and for the good of all members of the family. All checks will be made to the heads of families, covering their own payment and those to their wives and minor children. Children over the age of 16 will receive their checks direct, while non-resident Indians will have their money forwarded to them. In a letter to the Utes, Stone explained: "In line with my promise to you as to a statement of your Tribal money, you are advised that as of Jan. 1, 1949, the balance bal-ance of your Tribal account amounted to $15,000. Income credited to you from Jan. 1 to October 12, 1949, which is the date fixed upon which all living Indian persons would receive re-ceive per capita benefits, amounted to $463,000. Under your constitution and by-laws, half of such income that is unencumbered un-encumbered for other purposes would be available for per capita cap-ita distribution. The amount encumbered en-cumbered for other purposes at that time was $83,000. "This total, deducted from $463,000, leaves a balance of $380,000. Under your constitution constitu-tion and by-laws, half of this amount must be set aside as a reserve, which leaves a total of $190,000 for distribution. "Your committee recommended recommend-ed $125 for a per capita payment. pay-ment. This, multiplied by your total Tribal enrollment, amounts; to slightly more than $190,000. representing the total amount that could be distributed." Stone has offered to cooperate cooper-ate with the Utes in figuring out a wise plan of expenditure. He advised them not to be taken in by tvgh-prssure salosman ship, and said it is not a case of "trying to give away large amounts of unrestricted money, but to see that proper use is made of it." |
