Show l Local Group To Participate Sn : Trek From fkuvoo TO travel again the full route taken by the Mormons on . their trek to Utah, four members of the local chapter of Sons of the Pioneers left by auto Tuesday, night for Vermont, birthplace of the L.D.S. prophet, Joseph Smith. Those making the trip included Ray E. Dillman. Hollis Hullinger. E. J. Nixon and Heber T. Hall. They will be accompanied accompan-ied as far as Washington, D. C. by Mrs. Dillman, who will visit with her daughter, Mary, for . about a month. The group on the return trip will follow the Mormon trail to Nauvoo, Illinois, where they will meet other members of the Sons of the Pioneers for a Centennial crossing of the plains. Sam Page and James Bacon, also local members, will join the group f there, preparatory for departure July 14. A team of wooden oxen will be attached to each automobile making the trip, and the cars will be made to resemble covered cov-ered wagons. The expedition will contain three women and two boys in a company of 149 members, representing rep-resenting the vanguard company of pioneers that led the way across the plains to the Salt Lake D valley in 1847. STOPOVERS will be made at Winter Quarters, Omaha, North Platte, Ft. Laramie, Independence Indepen-dence Rock, Rock Creek and Fort Bridger, with evening programs pro-grams at each stopover. Mr. Dili-man Dili-man will be principal speaker at Independence Rock.. ' - Throughout the - trip cooking I, will be done in the open, and nights will be spent under the 1 stars. To further simulate the first pioneers, men over 65 years of age will be permitted to wear beards, while those younger than that must be clean-shaven. (It was not until after the Mormons Mor-mons had arrived in Utah that beards became popular.) The caravan will arrive at the new "This is the Place" monument monu-ment on July 22nd and will participate par-ticipate in the Centennial celebration cele-bration in Salt Lake City. |
