Planting time will soon be here and many of us will be purchasing purchas-ing seed. Let's be sure that we obtain high quality seed of adapted adapt-ed varieties. When you purchase seed look for the tag. State law requires all persons or companies offering offer-ing seed for sale to have a sample of the seed analyzed for germination, germ-ination, purity and noxious weeds. When offered for sale, the seed must be labeled showing the results of this test Look for the lag on the seed you buy. This is the only way you can know what you are getting. The following are some of the leading varieties of field crops recommended for this locality. Alfalfa The new Ranger variety var-iety is highly recommended. It is resistant to bacterial wilt and is winter hardy. Utah Pioneer and Grimm are good varieties if your, stands do not kill out by wilt disease Barley Velvon is the best spring variety. It is a high yielding, yield-ing, smooth-awncd barley with stiff straw. It is quite resistant .to smut. Winter Club is recommended recom-mended for fall seeding. Corn Silage Minhybrid 301, U. S. 52, Utahybrid 680 and Utah-ybrid Utah-ybrid 540 have done well in state and local tests. Oals Uton is a high-yielding variety, resistant to smuts. Overland Over-land is recommended where lodging lodg-ing is encountered because it grows about a foot shorter than Union. Spring Wheat Lemhi is the highest producing variety tested in the state. Winter Wheal Wasatch is resistant to smuts and will not lodge easily. Turkey 926 and Utah Kanred are good winter win-ter varieties but are not resistant resist-ant to smuts. Pasture Mixtures cannot be recommended without knowing the soil and water condition's. The Utah State Extension Service Ser-vice recently published a bulletin bulle-tin entitled "Recommended Utah Field Crop Varieties," which covers cov-ers most of the above information. informa-tion.
