Show Highway Safety Campaign Opens With Official O K With a sendoff from the Capitol, Capi-tol, in the form of a commendatory commenda-tory "Statement to the Press" .from Governor Herbert B. Maw, newspapers of Utah are launching launch-ing this week the second highway high-way safety campaign sponsored by the Utah State Press Association. Associa-tion. Congratulations to the newspapers news-papers for a good job already accomplished ac-complished and a challenge to further efforts were included in the Governor's message when he said: "The information that you are prepared to launch again through your newspaper columns an educational ed-ucational campaign aimed at further reducing the toll of fatalities fatal-ities and property damage on our highways is indeed welcome news to me. "In helping to reduce the fatalities fa-talities on our highways through your safety campaign in 1947, a reduction that was accomplished in the face of a heavy increase in highway traffic you made a tremendous contribution to the citizens of Utah for which I am deeply grateful. And you fulfilled admirably your pledge, made at .the conference I called in September Sep-tember of 1946, to assist in publicizing pub-licizing the need for greater safety on our highways. "Current traffic records indicate indi-cate that the gain we made in .1947 has not been maintained .thus far in 1948, so your renewed re-newed efforts are doubly impor tant at this tune, not only to try for further reductions but to hold the reductions we have already al-ready made. "I understand the campaign now to be launched under the sponsorship of the Utah State Press Association will continue through the balance of 1948. I commend each individual newspaper news-paper for the efforts devoted to this cause and I recommend full support of it, to every citizen of the state." With the opening timed to coincide co-incide with the beginning of the official state automobile inspection inspec-tion period, which began March 15th, material for the campaign., distributed through the Utah State Press Association is in the hands of every newspaper publisher pub-lisher in the state. |
