Show h. , .Zrfcv. , A- - Bountiful High School graduate Chris Schnabel has TOP ARTIST become one of the top illustrators in Utah State University's nationally recognized art department. local rock band, "P F Flyer," which plans its debut this summer in Salt Lake City. During his freshman year, his portrait of Paul McCartney was accepted into the New York Society Socie-ty of Illustrators Show, where only 200 pieces are accepted of the 5,000 entries. CHRIS WORKS mostly in oils and watercolors, with some use of mixed media. He also works in sculpture, and likes to sculpt a piece, then do a painting of the sculpture. "I enjoy illustrating subjects that look magical, things that don't appear in reality," he said. CHRIS' FAVORITE illustrators are those who are members of the Illustrators Workshop. "If I had to pick one, I guess it would be Bob Hindael," said Schnabel. He also admires Norman Rockwell and the fantasy illustrations of Maxfield Parrish. Although Chris is only a junior, he is ready to work. He plans to move to Los Angeles in September, Septem-ber, to begin working. ILLUSTRATING isn't the only form of artistic expression for Schnabel. This is no small statement, since illustration students at USU are among the top in the nation. "MY STUDENTS are doing better bet-ter work than many professionals in the business. Chris could make a living right now doing illustration in Los Angeles," commented Glen Edwards, illustration instructor at USU. Chris crew up in Bountiful and attended Bountiful High School, where he was a Sterling Scholar. After high school he was offered a freshman scholarship at USU. "THIS IS as good a commercial art program as there is in the country. coun-try. Looking back, if I had a choice of any school, I would still come to Utah State. I have learned a lot from Glen Edwards. He encourages encour-ages you to develop your own style and experiment with a variety of media," said Schnabel. Chris has developed his own style, which is a rendered cartoon style. "WITH SO many illustrators doing realism right now, I have decided de-cided to do something different," said the soft spoken illustrator. |
