| Show TOWN OWN WASHED AWAY over two drowned in linnolt illinois evansville ill april 3 1 at 6 this afternoon the levee a milo mile above shawnee town broke and from ill all information that can be gained here it to la learned that a great part of tho the place has been destroyed and perhaps a largo large number of citizens have been dt owned is 23 25 miles milea above evansville on the ohio riter it is bit bated in a valley of extremely low land with hills skirting it in ia the rear and with a 0 25 foot levee leve running from hill to hill bill the town is very much in the position of a fortified city and when the levee gave way a mile above the city under the pressure of a very high river the water shot through a n 20 foot 1001 opening and struck the place like a hurricane sweeping everything before it houses were turned and tossed about like ll 11 boxes aes tho the people were not warned and for that reason many were caught those at homo home sought refuge 1 in second stories and on housetops those in the streets wore were carried before the avalanche of water and probably a majority of them were drowned citizens came from the place by skiffs to telephone several miles away and asked for aid from evansville they said that more than people were drowned and they had reason to believe that it would reach or even I 1 1000 the water stands from 20 to 30 feet all over the town there are of couise no fires or lights in the place and total dar darkness knessi envelopes the desolate city conse 1 it was impossible for them thein to I 1 have anything like definite 1 tion the men immediately left the telephone and no further tion has been had no telegraph or telephone wires are working and out side bide communication appears I ble at 10 two steamboats and a couple of tugs started for shawnee i town under a full head of steam an anda d I 1 it is expected sonic some of them will arr arrive I 1 v there by 3 2 a in they carry large la rge supplies of food and blankets quickly collected by the city officials |
