Show THE STORY ST OF TOOELE f f 7 AIM n ay metallurgy has solved many problems that have hake lengthened the lift life of mining industry and made a market for more varied ores here is one metallurgical operation tapping slag at the tooele thoele smelter Edi editor torm nott note this is the second of a series ariet ot of eight articles article titled the story of 0 tooele after world war 1 I the metal industry was faced with a situation that threatened to close most of the mines and smelters shelters sm elters most of the easily smelted smelter oxidized ores had been mined and much of the future supply of metals als it became apparent would of necessity have to come from low grade sulphide lead zinc ores with higher cost reduction this presenter presented a challenge to the smelting smelling sm elting im y international smelting smelling Sm elting and refining company met the challenge with metallurgical improvements that breathed new life into the mining mining industry not only ot of utah but the entire west casting 7 aside thoughts of dismantling the tooele plants which were then closed down officials decided to reaka a comprehensive survey of the situation it was evident that a new supply ot of ore would have to ie be developed and that metallurgy would have to be ba al ad vanece to a point where it would woul d be possible to properly dress or ore a before it could be smelted smelter acono this it was found calla I 1 tor for the saving of 0 the zinc in lead zinc sulphide ores which hereto tore fore had been subjected to a penalty 4 when this crude product of 0 the tha i mines was shipped direct to smelters shelters sm elters J at the conclusion of the survey 1 in 14 1922 the international company I 1 decided to stay in utah and launched a twofold two fold told program which i required the expenditure ot of mil mg lions ol of dollars the program em ea i braced the entrance ot of the smelting smelling sm elting company into actual prospecting 10 and mining to obtain a adequate ton 4 nage to continuously operate the I 1 v smelter and to conduct exhaustive 14 j i metallurgical research this Is the second of 0 a series ot of eight articles arti clea the tha third will appear in thes J columns soon jg |
