V v By TOM HARALDSEN Bountiful High used a blistering first half offense to grab a big lead, then held off a determined comeback com-eback by Viewmont to capture a 62-54 girls' basketball victory Thursday evening. The win enabled en-abled Bountiful to clinch third place in Region Four. Meanwhile, Davis dumped Highland, but must now face a playoff with a yet-to-be determined . opponent this Thursday afternoon. The. contest will probably be played play-ed at Woods Cross High, with the winner entering next week's 4-A girls' state tournament at Murray High. In the other league game, East surprised league champ Woods Cross, though neither team's seeding at state was affected. At Viewmont, the Braves took off fast, running to a 15-2 lead, then increasing it to 19-4 at one point, Kristen Rose scored five of Bounti-ful's Bounti-ful's first nine points, with Lisa Wilkinson and Heidi Olsen also having hot first quarters. Bountiful led 21-10 after one period. The Braves continued their torrid tor-rid shooting in the second period, at one point leading 38-14 before two Viewmont hoops late closed the gap to 32-18 at halftime. Rose had 11 first half points, Wilkinson 10 and Olsen nine. But as in the first game this season sea-son between these two squads, Viewmont came back gallantly in the second half. Bountiful held a 46-28 lead when Launee Larsen hit a three-point shot, then another hoop, to make it 46-33. A rebound basket by Sharwan Smith, and a hoop by injured but gutsy Julie Stuart made it 46-37 after three periods. Bountiful seemed to regain its composure in the fourth period, building the lead back to 50-41 with 4:02 to go. Becky Yeates scored for Viewmont, but Michelle Behl came back with a quick score for the Braves to make it 52-43. But Larsen was accurate again from behind the three-point line, cutting the lead to 52-46. Olsen sank a free throw for Bountiful, but quick hoops by Stacey "Luke" Smith and Yeates made if 53-50 , with 2:30 left. Seconds later Viewr K mont had the ball again, threatening threaten-ing to come to within one, or tie it. Bountiful's Kim Johnson, however, grabbed a loose ball and went in for a score. Wilkinson scored later on a rebound, and Bountiful iced the game with free throws by Johnson and Olsen. Olsen led the way with 17 points, Wilkinson had 14, Rose 11, Behl 10, and Johnson 8. Stuart finished her career with 10 points, despite playing with a badly damaged knee that limited her mobility. Yeates had a fine game with 18 points, and Larsen scored 14. Bountiful finished league with a 6-4 record, and is 13-7 overall. The Braves will now open the state playoffs on March 9, probably at 6:30 a.m. , against the second-place team from Region Two. Viewmont finished league at 2-8, and was 6-14 overall. DAVIS 58 HIGHLAND 34 In Kaysville, the Darts made short work of the Rams, who finished 0-10 in league and did not win a game this season. Junior Heather Peel showed why she will be a force again next year, scoring 21 points, including a three-pointer. three-pointer. Senior Kristin Packer tallied tal-lied 16 for Davis, which finished region 5-5 and is 9-9 overall. Davis hopes for a state berth after its playoff game this Thursday. Should the Darts win, they will open state on March 10, probably at 8:10, against the number one team from Region Two. EAST 49 WOODS CROSS 47 In Salt Lake, the Leopards pulled pul-led a mild upset with a victory over Woods Cross. It was the first league loss for the Wildcats in two seasons, but it meant nothing as far as state seeding goes. Woods Cross was led by junior Marci Heaps, who had 19 points and played perhaps her finest game of the season. Amy Mason added eight points, while Jackie Williams, Wil-liams, Jodie Warhurst and Heather Hobbs all added six apiece. The Wildcats finished league at 9-1, and are 17-3 overall. Woods Cross begins defense of its state title on March 10, probably at 4:10 p.m. against the number four team from Region Two.
