Show protection against fire by dorothy gaye telford if people ot of this community would realize that there is a great loss every year caused by fire because we have hava nothing to fight fire we have fire plugs on acost every block but no fire trucks or fire feighl ing equipment for instance it if the high school would start on fire we have only one fire extinguisher in the building if the fire should get a very big start there would be an enormous loss of money books desks and paper supplies if our furniture store should catch fire there also would be another enormous loss of money dry goods notions notion and other valuable goods it also could cou d spread from building to bu bifi iding the people have nothing to fight fire with ahe people of the community have bave to pay for the damage A bucket brigade is a very old fashioned boned method of fighting fire there are many ways a fire can start and most of these ways are from carelessness matches could be put in metal containers out of the reach of smaller children if your chimneys need fixing A t would be wise to fix them almost im immediately rather than have a enormous loss caused by tire fire stoves furnaces boilers and their pipes should be fixed if broken before using jiing again oily rags should ie be hung bung up so the air can circulate through them sparks on the foots are knotner cause of fire if the shingles were made of metal tile slate or asbestos there would be less tires fires caused that way fires are often caused by electricity due to wrong wiring bare wires and the use of pen pennies riles in the fuse boxes faulty wiring and improper installation due to carelessness on the part of the individual cause millions of dollars loss in fires every year lightning causes few fires but W c casio nally the cause of a fire may be traced to lightning this cause can be gre greatly reduced by the esq of lightning Ight ning rods exploding gas is a common cause of fre fire do not use gas around a hot icove t and when cleaning clothes in gas do not rub hard because i this causes friction which may cause li a spark if the community were to buy a fire truck there would be less damage done by fire this town could depend wholly upon a volunteer fire department the town could provide firefighting fire fighting equipment have to employ firemen and w would find that the equipment would pay for itself by reducing the damage that fire caused who pays for fire losses the people of course people who live in frame houses pay more toward tires fires than people who live in brick houses if an uninsured house burns ohp the owner suffers a great loss much rire mare thin he would have had the house been insured n when property is insured the insurance company pays pay the owner for his loss but lie he seldom receives the full value of the property to pay him the insurance company uses the money the other people have continued on last page protection pr against fire by dorothy gaye telford continued from page one paid to insure their homes when the loss by fire increase the 1 insurance company charges more so 80 they can pay the people whose prope ty has been insured and destroyed moreover if fire losses are high increased fire fi re protection will be demanded the community will have to increase tax rates in order to provide such protection I 1 f here is a true
