Show SELECTIVE SERVICE AND 11 CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCIES all selective service registrants who have been reid from military ary bervice today were urged by brig gen lewis B hershey deputy director of selective service to offer their full assistance to state and local civilian defense agencies many young men have been granted deferment because of their occupations cupat ions because they have dependents pen dents or because they are riot not physically capable of undergoing service in the armed forces the general said nevertheless he added they are qualified to perform some work in connection with civilian clef tense ense activities and should offer their services to existing agencies or those thosa which are being organized by granting certain men defer nent ment congress when it adopted the selective training and service act of cf 1940 gave no indication that it intended to excuse these men from the obligation which rests upon every young man that of helping his country in times of emergency general hershey declared each man is expected to do his share in one way or another when a crisis threatens the national security he said the deputy director asserted many of our young men have entered the armed forces leaving at iome others who lor for one reason or another have had their military training deferred those who remain owe it to those who have been called and owe it to their country to help in its defense when they are needed they can do their part by offering their services in the interests ot of civilian defense pointing Do inting out that the office of civilian defense is coordinating the civilian defense activities of the states and expanding them to communities muni ties where they are not organized as yet the deputy director said that in in the very near future the vast majority of deferred registrants should be atile able to find a civilian defense activity where their services can be used ile he declared continued onlest rge age SELECTIVE SERVICE AND cl CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCIES continued from page one in the very near future each community will be engaged in civilian defense activities such activities of course cover a wide range and should include a task for almost every young man who is de laired le red from military training for one reason or another no young man should shirk his responsibility if it is humanly possible for him to take part in the increasing er civilian defense activities general hershey said |
