Show westinghouse TO AWARD 1411 14 4 11 scholarships the westinghouse electric manufacturing fac turing company will award six college scholar scholarships Alps to winners of the seventh annual national 4 H club rural electrification contest now in progress B P hess manager of west bighouse rural electrification announced today contestants will prepare reports on electrical studies and projects to serve agthe basis baas for selecting the winners in addition to scholarships westinghouse will provide free trips to the 4 H club congress at chicago november 27 to december 5 for winners ot of state contests contest and gold pins for winners in county competitions this annual contest mr hess pointed out helps boys and girls understand der stand the fundamentals of electricity and learn how to put electricity to work this knowledge will aid the youths in finding new jobs for electricity on the more than two million farms in the united states that are now electrified tri fied As an example of achievement in the rural electrification contests mr hess cited the work last year of 15 year old jack who lives near colorado springs colo jack built a homemade home made electric brooder which kept a newborn new born calf alive during a blizzard the calf later won a prize at the colorado state lair air the boy continued building electric gadgets including a chick brooder a for initialing fancy halters and an egg candler he won the colorado state 4 H club rural electrification contest and a free trip to the 1941 4 H club congress and international livestock at chicago another trip to chicago and a college scholarship were won by gladys mcclung 19 of carl W va whose interest in the 1911 electrification contest led to the installation of electricity in her farm community comin unitY mr hess added miss mcclung compiled reports show I 1 nv wh save money work and time in washing clothes lighting homes and doing other jobs t her farm home which had no elec t tn poi po i so convincing were her reports that she had little e trouble getting the necessary number of signers to petition for el 1 I iter electric service was dinst in st mias mcclung ung gave demonstrations st showing the proper way to wire homes and equip them with adequate lighting and she even wired part of her own home mr hess said the first national 4 11 club rural 1 electrification contest was held in 1936 with farm youths in 37 states participating the contest ts is conducted by the extension service of state agricultural colleges the united states department part ment of agriculture and the national committee on bys boys and girls club work the aw awards ards axe are provided by the westinghouse electric manufacturing Corn company pany |
