Show niGHT SOCCER Woods Cross and Bountiful battled to a 0-0 tie last Friday as they clashed in region action under th Wildcat football lights. The Braves had an up-and-down week as they lost to Highland 2-0, but then returned re-turned to win the Davis County Clipper Invitational tournament on Wednesday. The Cats knocked off Davis, 8-2, before tying the Braves. Baseball Crown Within Brave's Clasp THE CATS weren't ready to die yet. In the bottom of the fourth they scored four of" their own. After a couple of singles Chad Hammond stroked a double to score two. He scored on Troy Culli-more's Culli-more's single, who in turn scored on a single by Todd Dyson. Both teams scored another run in the later innings in-nings but by then the game was out of reach. DAVIS 20, WOODS CROSS 10: No that's not a misprint. The Darts and Cats put on a scoring parade that left both scorekeepers pulling their hair out trying to keep up with them. The Darts scored nine in the first with a little help from the Cats. "They scored those runs on two hits, one was a grand slam though," noted Coach Val Cullimore. "In between those hits we walked five guys and made two ciritical errors. We could have been out of the inning safely had it not been for one of them," he added. DAVIS RETURNED the favor in the fifth inning when the Cats scored eight runs on just three hits, but saw nine of their players go to first with walks. VIEWMONT 10, EAST 0: Junior Kevin Smith was the ace of the mound again as he only gave up one hit to the Leopards . After the first inning he threw a perfect game with no one from East getting a look at first. THE VIKES got all the runs they needed in the first. Steve Caputo led off with a triple; Smith then hit him in with a single. Doug Lee followed with a run scoring double; Troy Larsen drove him in with a single and finally Larsen scored on a sacrifice sacri-fice fly by Danny Hansen. The Vikings then picked up the rest of their runs in the fifth. Kurt Mathews singled and stole second. Caputo walked. Lee drove in one with a single, Larsen drove in one with a double; Roger Davis scored one with another single and catcher Lane Rozema finished off the scoring with a two run double. VIEWMONT 11, DAVIS 1: Davis scored a run in the top of the first with Ben Home driving in the run with a sacrifice fly. But then junior Kurt Mathews handcuffed the Darts on four hits as his teammates went wild at the plate. Viewmont wasn't behind for long as they came up with three runs in the bottom of the first. Caputo Capu-to walked, Smith followed with a single and both scored on a triple by Doug Lee. Larsen then hit a long fly ball to score Lee. THEY PICKED up two more in the second on an unusual play. With Jeff Porter, Mathews and Caputo all on base, Kevin Smith hit a short fly ball to the shortstop. The umpire called him out on the infield fly rule but the ball was dropped allowing Porter to score. Lee then singled home another run. The big inning for the Vikes was the fourth when they sent nine players to the plate and scored six runs. Roger Davis drove one in with a single, Hansen scored one when he reached first on an error. Rozema drove in a couple with a single and Porter flinged one home as did Mathews. VIEWMONT 10, HIGHLAND 1: The Vikes kept their great week going with this drilling of the Rams. Kevin Smith worked his second game of the week and came up with a five hitter while striking out six and walking none. The big inning came in the fifth when the Vikes scored seven runs in a wild inning. Smith began the affair with a single, the Rams then walked Lee. Larsen stroked a run scoring single followed by run scoring singles by Davis and Hansen. Jeff Porter struck out, but went to first when the catcher catch-er dropped the ball on the throw the catcher threw past first and into rightfield, which allowed two ' more runs to cross home plate. Caputo finished off the scoring with a run scoring single. Dave Wigham Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL The Bountiful baseball bunch continued their winning ways last week as the Braves came up with three more wins to run their region mark to 7-0 of the season. ALL THE Braves have to do this week is beat either East on Tuesday or Viewmont on Friday to lock up the region title and an automatic berth in the state tournament. Big news of the week though, is the emergence of offense for the Viewmont team. Going into last weeks action the Vikings had only scored 8 runs in three ballgames, but the bats are alive and well as the Vikes scored a total of 31 runs in winning all three of their games. The Vikes are right in the thick of the race for a state playoff with a 3-3 record. The big showdown this week sends Bountiful Boun-tiful to Viewmont on Friday. CURRENT REGION standings have Bountiful on top at 7-0 followed by Viewmont 3-3 ; Highland 3-3; East 3-4; Woods Cross 2-5; and Davis 1-5. Bountiful 12, Highland 1: The Braves combined hitting and pitching in this outing to complete out man the Rams. Senior Phillip Schmutz was cruising cruis-ing along though six innings of shutout ball. He had ten strike outs and only two hits, when his coach pulled him. BOUNTIFUL picked up all the runs they needed in the second inning with Steve Beyer and Bobby Minhondo both driving in runs. Todd Smith drove in another run in the third when he followed Eric Johnson and Mike Stevens with the third single of the inning. Dave Wilson got things rolling in the fourth with a single, Minhondo was hit by a pitch and Lex Brown reached first on an error loading the bags. Eric Johnson, the Braves leading hitter, then i stroked a two run single. Stevens then drove in another run. BOUNTIFUL wasn't through scoring yet. In the sixth, Todd Smith started things off in grand style with a homerun to left. Jeff Pitcher was waled and Beyer was hit by a pitch. Wilson then collected an RBI with a single to center. The final run came in the seventh inning. Todd Beck led off with a single and quickly stole second. Johnson then drove him in with a single and he too promptly stole second. Stevens then had a single and Smith followed with a hit. The final runs came on a single by the pitcher for two more runs. The Rams avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh but it was no where near enough. BOUNTIFUL 4, HIGHLAND 3: This one went extra ex-tra innings with Bountiful needing a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the ninth to keep their record unblemished. The previous day the Braves had toyed with the Rams 12-1 and maybe they figured they were in for an easy win. Junior Steve Luddington went the full nine in this battle giving up just five hits while striking out 12. HIGHLAND took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Braves came right back with Eric Johnson stroking a two run double to give Bountiful Bounti-ful a 2-1 lead after three. Highland tied the score in the top of the seventh to send the contest into extra frames. The Rams then took a 3-2 advantage in the top of the ninth. THINGS LOOKED bleak for the home Braves as their first two hitters were retired. But then Steve Beyer worked his way on with a walk and in stepped Dave Wilson who promply stroked a triple tri-ple to left to drive in Beyer. The hit must have ruffled the Ram pitcher, because on the next pitch he threw it past the catcher which allowed Wilson to score the winning run. Bountiful 10, Woods Cross 7: This one was wild from the start. Junior Eric Johnson got the rare start for the Braves and he worked for just over three innings. Anotherjunior, Scott Ongley, came on in relief and looked good until the late going when he ran into control problems. Coach Olsen spent little time in sending the senior ace, Phillip Schmutz, to mop up and the righthander struck out the Wildcats in the 7th to earn the save. BOUNTIFUL started off with the runs early, like in the first inning. Todd Beck walked and was driven in later by Eric Johnson. Mike Stevens then stroked a home run over the center fielders head to drive in two more runs. WOODS CROSS got a couple back on a triple by Chad Hammond that drove in Race McCleery and Dave Italasano who had both singled. The Braves then scored three in the third with Jeff Pitcher getting a three run homer to center. They then padded the lead in the fourth. Beck led off with a double, the Cats then gave Johnson a free pass to first and then turned right around and did the same to Stevens. Todd Smith then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt and Dave Wilson followed with a two run single. |
