Show senator answers subscribers letter UN knitel ITEl STATES SENATE committee on the district of columbia march 8 1940 randolph utah your letter of the fourth instant I 1 is it hand I 1 am glad to hear from you and to receive your suggestions relative to tile hie matter of obtaining federal funds for the ibe construction of dams on n I 1 r umber number of creeks tu in boar section of the state I 1 have already urged that appropriations be made for irrigation and reclamation la projects and have earnestly earnest lr insisted that ap appropriations at ions be made for tile the construction of small reservoirs reservoir 8 especially ally those needed on the three projects to which you refer in a re tent cent interview with the commissioner Commissi of the bureau of reclamation aud and ther aher officials of the department of the interior I 1 called attention to the that in some sections of the the population was wag diminishing be cause of the inadequate supply of water er during the irrigation season I 1 called attention to the fact that small reservoirs were imperatively impe needed lombet toi neet the requirement of the people and to prevent further migrations from some districts mas I 1 state that when I 1 was in the house I 1 aided in drafting the so called newlands or reclamation bill and have urged appropriations by congress in order to conserve tho water supply weded in the development of those sections where irrigation was essential for foi agricultural purposes I 1 am glad I 1 to know that in utah we have been in obtaining appropriations for a number of reservoirs in 1933 1 I conferred with the president and urged that from the large appropriation which was made to aid in improving the economic situation allocations t aou hould ld be made for irrigation projects I 1 urged that appropriations of at least irom from twenty to twenty five million bollan be allocated from the funds to construct five irrigation projects in ill utah and that a part of the wine same should be utilized for small reservoirs there were those in the department of agriculture who opposed the bringing of more land under cultivation the secretary of agriculture contended that there must a curtailment in production iro and that it v was as very lo 10 bring more lands under cultivation after a prolonged hearing in the white louse house the president indicated that he favored the develop development of irrigation projects and five projects which I 1 had recommended were placed upon the genda and appropriations lions necessary I 1 tor for their completion were directed YO four ur of these projects have already leen completed and the fifth one namely the deer creek project would have leen coral completed eted some time ago bad it not lot been for the disputes among various J companies and individuals who claimed rights rights in tho the provo river I 1 can call only repeat re peat abat I 1 appreciate the importance of f the construction of mall reservoirs and will urge appropriations to accomplish this result I 1 shall confer confer again with the commissioner of the bureau of reclamation with respect to the three projects 10 0 o which apu u refer I 1 should add however baT ever that it I 1 is luite likely that bat the appropriations for cor small reservoirs will consist of a romp sum KUTO for allocation by tile the reclamation la 13 mation service to suh such projects as hey deem decal abe he most meritorious I 1 am tid id that there area are au many any demands tor for I 1 for small reservoirs not continued on last page |
