Layton Marshall, E Itor and Proprietor Wm. E. Marshall, Business Manager SUBSCRIPTION 1.' Ter Year in Advance R' SANITARY SYSTEM HALTS MILK LOSS Extreme Care Is Urged in Cleanliness of Cows. By John A. Arey, Extension Dairyman, North Carolina State College. WNU Service. Dairymen lose thousands of dollars each summer as a result of not handling their milk properly. Because milk is so easily contaminated, every person connected with its handling should be clean in his methods. When drawn from healthy cows, few bacteria may be found in it. Milk souring is caused by. bacteria changing milk sugar into lactic acid. It is impossible to remove these bacteria by straining, as many people think. Milk receives most of its contamination from the body of the cow during milking. Therefore, it is essential that all parts of the animals body be kept clean and well-groom- Then, too, the milkers hands may be a source of contamination, so they should be clean and dry during the milking process. Small top pails have proven effective in cutting down the number of bacteria that enter while the cow is being milked. Dairymen should recognize this type of container as one of the easiest and cheapest means at his disposal for producing good milk. All containers used in handling milk should be of metal with all comers and seams completely filled with solder. To clean these containers thoroughly they should first be rinsed in lukewarm water, then scrubbed with a brush in water of the same temperature as that in the rinsing process to which a good alkali washing powder has been added. After washing, sterilize with steam and store in a clean dry place. Milk should be cooled immediately after the milking process and held at a temperature of below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Famous Headline Hunter EVERYBODY: HELLO a yarn from Claire Gibson of Chicago about an adventure that took place in Springfield, 111. Claire was just a little girl when she had that adventure. It was the first one of terror nothing that her life, and for thrills and plain has happened to her since could ever even approach it. out-and-o- ut It was a hot day in the early summer of 1910. Claire had an invitation to a party that was being given at a house some distance away from her home and she was all dressed and ready to go. It must have been somewhere between seven and eight in the evening, because Claire remembers that the party started at eight. DEPARTMENT) , She left her home, walked two blocks to the trolley line, and waited for a car to come along. When it arrived, she got on and took a seat up near the end of the car. The car moved on, and, after a few blocks, an old lady boarded it and took a seat near the middle. More people got on after that. It was pretty well filled by the time it reached Fifth and Rafter streets and started to cross the railroad tracks. Claire was up in front of the car, and she saw everything that happened. That crossing they were coming to was a dangerous one, and it seemed to her that all necessary care was being taken to see that the car got over it safely. The conductor got out and ran ahead to make sure there were no trains coming. Apparently satisfied, he motioned to the motorman to come ahead, and swung back aboard the moving trolley. And, then something went wrong. The trolley was moving across the tracks was right in the middle of them when suddenly a freight train appeared out of nowhere, looming up in the night not three yards away from the car! There was no time to avoid it no time to do anything. Some one in the car screamed. Then there was a thud a terrific jar a crashing of glass and a terrible grinding sound. The big engine was tearing and ripping the trolley car to pieces! The air was full of shouts and screams now. Bodies were flying everywhere. At the first impact, Claire had been tossed into the air and tune, an encouragement for every hope. Sainte Faix. Climbed Over Bodies of the Dead. As soon as she got to her feet, she thought of the old woman who had boarded the car just after she had. Back through the window of the wrecked car she climbed, in search of that old lady. I climbed over bodies, she says, "until I found her. She was unconscious but I dragged her out of the window and laid her on a nearby lawn. I screamed for help, but no one paid any attention to me. Starting Mash for Turkeys Turkey growers may use home produced or purchase farm grown grains for a starting mash, if they are balanced with a good protein supplement, says a St. Paul university farm authority. HOUSE OF HOPPER, Eight Breeds of Swine In the United States there are two distinct classes of swine, the breeds of the lard type and of the bacon type. The plan of feeding has much to do with the class of market hogs produced. As an example, less corn and more oat and barley meal in the ration produces bacon, rather than lard in young hogs. The hogs known as lard breeds are Duroc, Jersey, Poland China, Chester White, Berkshire, Hampshire and Spotted Poland China. Those known as the true bacon breeds are the Tamworth and Yorkshire. These last named are not the only hogs that are producing our bacon. A drink of water every hour in the field in hot weather, all the loose salt the horses want at the barn or in the pasture at night, and reasonable attention by the driver enable horses to work steadily on very hot days, advises a writer in Hoards Dairyman. Even colts demand special attention during summer months. Foals from work mares work too hard if they follow in the field. A foal grows better when kept in the barn during the day and turned on pasture with the mare at night. A good plan is to bring the mare in for nursing in the middle of the morning and afternoon while the foal is young. The proper care of the horses feet to prevent lameness is always of paramount importance as a lame horse is not a serviceable horse. Feet should be trimmed regularly, and excessive growth should be removed to prevent breaking high, thus causing the horse to become tender and to prevent both toe and quarter cracks. By this time, too, Claires head was beginning to clear and she was sick at heart at the horrible sights she had seen. With the blood still streaming from her, she began to run home, too excited to realize that she was badly injured. She reached home all but exhausted ready to collapse. Her wrist was cut to the bone, and there were splinters of glass in her face, and her back was strained from lifting people out through the window of that wrecked car. She was so weak from loss of blood that she staggered as she entered her house. Her folks called a doctor and put her to bed. And it was the next day before she read in the newspapers the cause of the accident. The conductor had looked for the train all right. He just hadnt been able to see it. It was dark, and in addition to that a thick fog had fallen over the city, obscuring the view. The freights headlamp had gone out, and the watchman at the crossing had gone home just a short while before. All FUES Placed anywhere. Daley Fly Killer attracts and kills Clee.
