Ill be back in a few minutes. ffl in How Things Change Lily Do you remember, Willie, how you used to catch me in your HOME FROM LAYERS arms every night? Well Managed Flock Would Pay for Equipment. Willie Yes, dear, and now I catch you in my pockets every morning. I SIGNED ARTICLES iBy H. H. Alp, Poultry Extension Specialist, University of Illinois. WNU Service. A flock of 200 hens, properly man i , aged and cared for, would in one ' years time just about pay for the g complete installation of a sink, water and bathroom in a farm home. Installation of a sink, running water and a bathroom would add to the comfort of many farm homes, and the effort and expense could be justified by the added protection afforded the health of the farm faulrun-inin- tily. Poultry records show that the apn proximate , profit from a flock amounts to $256. This amount of the represents about total cost of a simple pressure water system installation, with the necessary fixtures for kitchen and bathroom. A persistent determination to use poultry as a means to meet such ,an objective often has more to do with the success of a poultry enterprise than the flock owners love for poultry. Acquiring a flock of birds with the 'inherent ability to lay well during the winter months has a favorable effect on poultry cash income and ,the realization of the flock owners objective. In acquiring such a flock it is helpful to mark those birds that start laying early, especially if they are of good type, size and of apparent good health. A hen so marked might eventually disappoint the flock owner, but if she is still laying when he selects breeders, the band will be helpful in making selections. ; 200-he- two-thir- thundered Blodgett No use, this now. settle Well again. H. Niss-leextension professor of vegetable gardening at the New Jersey College of Agriculture, Rutgers university, reminds farmers. The purchase and use of good seed are among the first essentials of obtaining high yields, Mr. Nissley says, in urging vegetable growers to spend plenty of time and thought on the selection of their seed during the coming months. Some concerns specialize in seed for certain kinds of vegetables and offer better stock seed than is otherwise available, he reports. While some vegetable seed, such as lettuce, is produced by a few large companies in California and sold by many seed houses, certified seed from such locally grown vegetable crops as tomatoes, egg plants and peppers is available. In many instances, the seed is produced and saved by local growers so that the quality is known and the strain adapted to local soil and climatic y, Agnes has discarded the lover who wrote such beautiful blank verse. Mechanically he read the words on it and suddenly was on his feet, snatching it out. Of course The logical place to leave a message With slowly freezing blood only Blodgetts startled eyes read: Dear Darling Dean Dont die Dig Dig Do Dean dear Dare dig dig dig dig Dont dont die Dalice. Who was Dear Darling Dean. Dear Darling Dean? Someone she had left a message for, someone coming, maybe, someone desperate, threatening to die why? For love? Someone she loved Dear, Darling Dean! Blodgetts face was very red. His eyes glittered cruelly. One read of these things but one always fancied they couldnt happen to him Dear, Darling Dean Dalice Dizzily Blodgett stumbled back to the bedroom of the strangely empty closet where jealous fury, sudden, terrible, lashed him into murderous monster had pain. The green-eye- d his way with him utterly, yet outwardly Blodgett was very calm as he patiently waited for the visitor who might come for the message. Thered be a talk calm, if possible a thorough understanding, a confession and then maybe a murder. Blodgetts agile mind had gotten as far as the police station with Dalice d tottering in whitely, with remorse when his overwrought nerves tensed. A latch key in his own lock! The door opened and Blodgetts eyes blazed. A young man carrying a black bap came quickly in. He crossed the living room and passed the bedroom where Blodgett s purposely hid, going directly to den. He was much at home and The Man evidently. Blodgett waited until he had seated himself at the desk and read the message closely before he, too, casually walked in, his heart thumping his ribs. The young man started awfully as his shadow fell across the desk. But he merely nodded coolly and put paper in the typewriter evidently to write Dalice an answer. Breathing hard, Blodgett touched his shoulder: Your name is Dean? he demanded through twisted, livid lips. said the young Dean yeah, man, beginning to write rapidly. Dear, Darling Dean? sneered Blodgett. Stopping to tinker with a stubborn key, the young man grinned affably: Maybe, he averred. My name happens to be Blodgett, vouchsafed Blodgett, the veins big on his forehead. Young Dean looked back over his shoulder a bit startled. Oh, so? he said, writing rapidly again. Perhaps, said Blodgett with fearful, tight - lipped composure, youll be so good as to explain this he touched it message to me hatingly with the tip of his finger. Dean looked at it askance. Dont seem to be a message, he said, cheerily. What! said Blodgett, sharply. I say it dont seem a message More like Dont lie to me, thundered Blodgett, suddenly. Young Dean got up quickly, eyping Blodgett, eyeing the door. 1 half-craze- Dal-ice- Approved Fattening Mash Following are the ingredients of a good fattening ration, supplied by a poultryman in the Montreal Herald: Five hundred pounds fine ground wheat, 600 pounds fine fine ground oats, 580 pounds ground barley, 200 pounds meat-me60 per cent, 100 pounds powdered milk, 20 pounds fine iodized salt (.05 per cent). Hes been here before often Yes, evidently he Wait! Oh, Fred. Hes been here before because Ive needed him before. And I needed him because I was deep in a story and the d key stuck on the typewriter and I wanted it fixed right away oh, Fred, hes my typewriter man The note sputtered Blodgett hoarsely. said Dalice, Only idle words, calmly. Look. See, I wrote them trying to find what ailed the key. I wrote his name just because I was thinking Id have to bother to get him again everything begins with a d dont you see Oh, my dear For suddenly with awful relief Blodget had put his miserably shamed face in his hands. Ages later when everything was clear again and sane and at peace Blodgett, alone, while Dalice got dinner, found courage to pick up the paper young Dean had produced. It was an account of services rendered the typewriter. I said I wanted to settle this, remembered Blodgett with hot face. And darn it he was perfectly willing. Suddenly a wry, grudging smile came. With sweat on his forehead he fumbled in his pocket for off-ha- his checkbook. Guess I will, he said contritely. Hair Nets Used by Women of Egypt 1,600 Years Ago Hair nets were used by women in Egypt some 1,600 years ago. This may be confirmed from an exhibit in the hall of Egyptian archeology at Field Museum of Natural History where a net of Roman type, estimated to have been made between the Third and Fifth centuries A. D., is shown in a collection of ancient textiles. No attempt was made at the invisibility achieved in later hairnets, however this net is a heavy, knitted ornamental cap-lik- e item in bright red wool. According to museum archeologists, the hair was swathed in linen veils until the head was about twice its natural size, and then this net was stretched over the already wrapped and covered crowning glory of the wearer. It was fastened by tying strings attached to it. Displayed with it are a bonnet and cap, both of linen, with plaid designs. In the bonnet, which resembles in cut what could be termed a sunbonnet, there are embroidered lines in dark brown silk g the' tan linen. It is edged with blue striped linen. The cap is interwoven with lines of blue silk. Both bonnet and cap consist of two halves stitched together, each half being lined with a coarser linen than that which showed when worn. criss-crossin- Pattern 1623 or in three shades of one color for a lovely jeweled effect.
